So, I figured I'd refinish my 858 and 58L in black, as I love the rifles, but can't stand that blue-grey paint they come with. I did both rifles in the same flat black paint, but then clearcoated the 58L.

What I can't decide now is whether to leave the 858 flat, or clearcoat it as well. While the 58L isn't actually as shiny as it appears in the pic, I actually think I like the plain flat black better... hmmmm.....

Either way, I think they look waaaaay better than with the factory paint!

Flat black Canadian Tire rust paint  I had left over from painting my BBQ last summer... worked great for the BBQ, so I figured I couldn't go wrong! :p Just degreased the rifles, sprayed about five light coats, and reassembed... both turned out well, but we'll see if the paint actually stays stuck to 'em when I get them to the range!

The flat black on the 858, w/out the clearcoat, is almost exactly the same color and texture as my ARs... I think I'm going to leave the 858 as is...

Flat black looks great. I didi one of my FN's like it.

How do you find the mount with the rd sight?
Does it maintain zero?
I have the one from Wolverine that replaces the rear sight. Have not installed it yet but now I am wondering if I should go with a mount like yours.

Regards,

LOL Guess I'd better not shoot more than 49 rounds, just to be safe!! :p

Boomer, to answer your Q, I haven't had it out yet, but the mount is rock-solid, and the red dot attached very securely, so I'm hopeful it'll maintain zero...

I've realized I now need one of those Galil-style folding stocks, though, as the red dot's way too high to allow any kind of cheek weld... oh, well, it's only money, right?!??!

You should have used the high heat engine block paint...I think you can get it in flat black...just a word of caution though; I used rust paint on a single shot 22lr barrel one time. After a few months I noticed rust on the barrel starting to come through the paint. I've NEVER had problems with rust before on any of my firearms and can only conclude that the paint trapped some form of moisture. Needless to say I removed the paint and got rid of the rust quickly....

Looks good! I hope it lasts for you. I used Krylon on mine and it starts to melt after 50 rounds.

Haha same thing happened to me, I heard all this sizzling I was like what the hells goin on? then saw all me black paint melting off the barrel :D

In my experience regular paint does not hold up well around gun oil and solvents and it ends up getting gummy and comes off easily. Most painted guns end up looking like crap after they see a bit of use and wear.

The "issue" grey enamel on these rifles is pretty much maintenance free, very rugged and tough. Replacing this with an inferior finish just because the color is not quite right just does not make sense to me. But then again it's not my rifle......

I'd rather see a rifle that shows signs of use than a perfect safe queen.

Is your idea of "signs of use" a gooey tremclad mess? Because that's what you end up with after oil and solvent come in contact with conventional paint. Been there and done that. If you never clean with solvents or use oil or grease I'm sure you'll be fine.......
