looking to refinish my sks laminate stock
the handguard is not laminate so i sanded it and will try to match the color with the laminate stock

the original color of the stock is blonde and id like to stain it in a reddish tint and have a smoother finish

ive read a bit on the subject and found miniwax stain+ red dye would be a good option but im still not too sure about the clear coat: tung oil, poly, linseed, shellac???

im also not quite sure whats the exact finish on the laminate stock... its a shinny gloss finish that looks like a clear coat
would sanding remove any finish even shellac?

any suggestion to remove stock finish ?
any stain/dye suggestions?
any finish suggestions?

thanks !

I used a furniture stripper to take the finish off, paint it on and let it sit for a while then scrape/wipe it off.
Then I used minwax tung oil after lots of fine sanding and cleaning (This is where you can apply your stain...start light and darken if you want to).
The key I found is many coats of tung oil, apply a coat then wipe it off. Let dry for the day then scrub with 000 steel wool wipe off the metal bits and repeat (the more coats the better) 15+ makes for a sweet finish.
Also the last coat of tung you do do not wipe it off, let it dry for a full 24 hours and DO NOT TOUCH IT.
I Had a hardwood stock not laminate so Im not sure how the finish will compare but it will probably be good.

Make yourself a jig or something to hang it on or support it on a surface that wont get touched during the oil process.

thanks good info, i already have the tung oil in hand and some ''gunstock '' colored miniwax stain... im just looking for some cheap effective red dye to add to the stain without ####ing it up (water based dye and oil stain arent a good mix i think)
so im looking into red + brown leather dye as a stain and after that the tung oil

Red mahogony stain, amber shellac. Boom done.

thanks, not too confident working with shellac as i never did... i tought my laminate was covered with after closer inspection seems to be a clear coat painted ... very glossy
