Hey guys,

I just became the owner of a Browning Citori White Lightning. I was told it was 'mint', but the bluing shows otherwise, in my opinion.

Now, the rest of the gun is in fantastic shape, since the receiver is silver nitrided (or whatever they call it), and it's very low round count.

Since money IS an issue (I could be layed off at work very soon), is there any 'good looking' alternative to full re-bluing? I was quoted $400 for the set of tubes because it would need to be slow-rust blued. I'd like it to look good, but for $400, I can keep it as is!

Would Armacoat in gloss black look almost as good as a good bluing job? I know, blasphemous... :(

I don't really want to try 'home bluing kits'... any viable alternatives?

ANY suggestions would be appreciated!

I wouldn't use a dremel.
I'd try some on a rag and my finger tip.
I've used K&G Coating's bore cleaner to polish their gun blue coating before doing that.
Mind you it's a hell of a lot more durable then hot blue.

#1. Try rubbing the blemishes away with some gun product and a cloth. G96, Hoppe's, or Break-Free.

#2. As above with a bronze brush.

#3. Still no luck? OOOO nor OOO steel wool and gunproduct.

After that, it's a candidate for refinishing.

#1 - Didn't work

#2 - I'll try that tomorrow!

Thanks for the tips. If is DOES need refinishing, would ArmaCoat/DuraCoat work? Would it look out of place?

I'm just not sure I could justify $400 to reblue...

blue

in my humble option I would
leave it as is ,clean wax and shoot it.
As a cheap sob , I have tried to get
away with partial jobs and always
turns out poor, I do lots of quick refinish
jobs in old belguim sxs and cheap 22's
so don't matter if you screw up.
Just my .02 worth

Re-blue ?

Last weekend I was in Kentucky for the Knob creek shoot, while wandering the flea market area/sales area I saw a guy down there selling chemical solutions for just about everything. I bought some miracle brass cleaning products, BUT, he also had something for cleaning up and re blueing barrells. I'm thinking of restoring the Superposed lightning I inherited from dad.
He was working on one that had one end that looked brand new while the other un restored end looked like it had been someones truck for 40 yrs. it was a mess and really pitted.
He explained completely how and what he had done to bring back the good end.
I dont remember the exact name of the product but i've just dug up one of his flyers here. Try contacting him he was quite willing to answer any and all questions and was easy to get alone with.

Not the best picture to determine what it really looks like, but it does look a bit like someone tried to touch up worn blueing with a cold blueing solution.

I'm guessing this is the case. When I polished it with a bit of car polishing compound, parts of the bluing came right off (down to the bare metal). It made it look a little better in some parts, but the bare metal is telltale cold blue (in my opinion).

Either way, it's being shipped off to another member to be refinished as we speak. I'll post a pic when it's back.

Thanks for everyone for the advice!
