I have an older shotgun which has the usual dings and scrapes from being in the field for many years. I would like to refinish the stock. At present the stock appears to have a varnish like finish. I would like to strip it down and possibly use tru oil as a finish. What I would like to know is how you would handle the areas that are checkered. I have heard some say to leave this area alone, however I don't see that working if it has a varnish finish and I am going to use a oil finish. Would you use stripper on the checkering as well? Any recommendations appreciated. Thanks
