Hi all

I am refinishing a sporter stock off a m38 6.5 swede. I am currently stripping the layers of poorly put on paint. I am easily strapping it off no chemical used. I plan to sand and then stain or oil the wood again. I am not a ver seasoned wood worker so I was wondering if there is a particular stain/oil that is best to use. Also should a seal it with something else after. Any tips would be greater appreciated

Thank
Marc

Well, first off what sort of final look are you wanting?

You can also get a feel for the colour with only oil on it by putting some mineral spirits or oil paint thinner on it. The colour you see is what you'd get with an oil finish. If you don't like that then you'll want to look at a stain.

Careful with the stain though. It's not intended to be a paint. If you don't rub most of it off I find that the wood can end up looking "muddy". In fact I don't actually like stain simply because it does make the wood look muddy to my eyes.

A trick I tried on some very light stock wood during a recent project was to mix the stain I chose 1:1 with boiled linseed oil. This made the stain less strong but I really liked the clear and subtle look it gave. And best of all it coloured the wood more like a tint than a pigmented product. So the grain was left nice and clear looking.

As with anything new you want to try your methods and products out on some similar sort of scrap wood. Never just jump in and do something so hard to correct without trying it on some similar wood scrap first.
