Reflex Vs Tube?

When I picked up my SVT last Friday I also bought a cheap reflex sight. I put it on one of my SKS's...and SHAZAM!...I stepped into the 21st century! I'm not a big fan of sights where something can go wrong...field experiences with scopes and big game hunting have left me scarred...so I always have preferred peeps...but this little thing is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! green dot...both eyes open...point...pull trigger...fastfastfast...(wow) So what's the diff between a reflex and a red dot tube? ...advantages? fastest? more rugged? Be gentle, I feel like I'm an old guy who's just discovered ######! ...thanks...

I have both and have not yet seen a practical difference.

My red dot is a TRS25 and I suspect it is a bit more rugged than the window sight.

In my expereince the issue with these sights has been:

Is it bright enough to see on a real bright day, such as sunny day in the snow?

Is the red dot small enough to permit a fairly precise aim? The Bushnell TRS25 really impressed me with the fine dot. I have just returned from the range, where I shot it at 100 yards and got 4" groups with my SKS , which is probably as good as the rifle/ammo is capable of.

I like the open style sight. There is just less "stuff" in the way... no adjustment turrets, no power knob. I just find it to give me a better, less cluttered view. That is why I have not jumped on the TRS-25 bandwagon.

That being said, I agree that the dot must have an adjustment range that allows it not to wash out in the sunlight.

...maybe i need to pick up one of these and compare?

any recommendations on a good reflex sight that is economically priced (sat below $200)?

Can you show more photos of your sks.

I like the color and rail setup.

As to tube vs reflex I'm not fond of tube sights, especially on a scout type location. It's because of my eyes sight though. I find them harder to see through, it's a reality for me with my vision though.

Up close on a traditional mount I don't notice a huge difference though,

Thanks! I'm leaning toward reflexes, but if I can find a TRS25 I'd buy to at least try it out...

I have 2 SKS's, both 1953 Tula...$190 each...and took 2 years to put together these matching setups...bought all at discount...ATI's (modified) are coated with pigmented epoxy, Amerlock 400...I use it in bulk so a foam roller or two is pretty cheap, but expensive by the gallon...MI sights are great!, bought on EE...looking for more...and older magwedge rail...

I like these a lot! painted the painted SKS tan...stock is black because that's the colour of the epoxy, that or grey...still working on my blued one...want same configuration...keeping it all black...

That turned out great. I like the color.

Very nice work.

wanted one black and the other a mix of colour

and i took off anything that went...clunk or tink...no metal on the bolt cover pin or sling...all quiet!

i think i like it better with the tan metal and black stock than the other way around...not sure why? :)

very nice looking set-up :)

I think one advantage a tube would have is traditional cap covers for protection from weather/dirt.

Looks bad a$$. The air cooled hand guard looks awesome. Why did you not go with the choate stock that is similar?

I prefer reflex but they are significantly more expensive if you want quality. I love the TRS-25 as it really performs above its price range but the tube style always feels crowded to me. The glass, dot, brightness, size etc are very good for the price. I bought a Vortex Razor HD today to try. I want a reflex but most leave so much to be desired. If I can't drop the rifle without breaking the optic then I don't want it. It needs to be bright enough to be glowing over the background on a very bright day and have brightness settings for every light down to dusk. Glass needs to be clear, dot can't flare, halo or wash out. Battery has to be a common size. Battery has to be replaceable without removing the sight. I compared quite a few red dots and the only one better than the Vortex was an Aimpoint T1. I chose the Vortex based on price, being a good reflex design and price. But mostly price. The Aimpoint is niiiice :) I'll probably look for a deal on a 2 moa H1 for the XCR. Bottom line is the Razor is not miles ahead of the TRS for 5x the price. Its just a tad better and... reflex :)
