registering a no serial number firearm?

Easy-peasy. Tell them there's no Serial Number - they'll send you a little sticker with the firearm registration number on it, to be attached to the firearm.

They had to do that for my Cooey 600. Rather than use the sticker, I stamped the number right into the receiver :)

As was said, they will send you a very expensive, taxpayer funded sticker.

But the important thing is that you have it in the government registry. In the future, when they demand that you turn in "the shotgun" attached to your name, a serial number really doesn't matter much.

Hope that helps.

Do they still do the sticker thing? When I transferred a Cooey into my name I was given a registration cert with serial # left blank. It just says Cooey .22 . This was the middle of last year.

i think that means you have to determine a serial number yourself , put it on registration as well as the firearm. Call em up to ask what the deal is maybe

In the absence of a real serial number, the Firearms Registration Number becomes the important number - they'll leave the FSN blank, which is meaningful in itself.

When you buy a custom gun from some pistol shops, you can get a personallized serial number, so it's very likely you can choose one, as long as that number is not in use on another exact model already. Call and ask before you stamp/engrave - I think it would be extremely cool to have your own choice of serial on it.

So OICU812 would be a good one... or 8675309 or 59009 (would look like "boobs" if held upside-down :) ) or BOBSHOTGUN. Certainly there are a few numbers I wouldn't recommend, such as "Serial Number:", "SN-REMOVED", or "FILED-OFF", as that would really confuse LEO!

Hello Dispatch, I pulled over a guy with a shotgun that has the serial number "Filed-Off" :)

I believe they quit issuing the stickers. Supposedly kept coming off. In any case, prior to 1968, S/N's weren't required on .22's, Stateside. The U.S. Gun Control Act of 1968 made 'em mandatory. Our lot just went along with it.

Could you not just return the sticker?

I just got some stickers for a couple of old .22 rf's that I got, they seem to be inconsistent in issuing them. The seller was actually amazed when I told him, because he only had the guns a short time and was never issued stickers.

Seems to be hit and miss with the stickers. I just registered an old Sure Shot .22 and didn't get a sticker (two weeks ago). The serial number field is just blank.

no stickers anymore and you get a cert that looks like this:
