Hey all,
This is my first post here and I have a question for all of you handgun guru's. My restricted Pal should be here anyday now and I got offered 3 free pistols. They were bought in the states from my girlfriends uncle when he was a truck driver years and years ago and they are hiding in a basement somewhere because he never knew what to do with them, he offered them to me if I want them. Now is it possible to take these to get verified and registered or am I out of luck and he should take these in to the amnesty?????

Any insight would be awesome

Thanks
Ben

edit, they were bought by my girlfriends uncle, he has them still and he had them in the truck for protection im assuming, i think 10+ years ago.

If they are in Canada and have not been registered they are illegal.
If at some point they were registered under the old RCMP system but not re-registered you MIGHT be able to slip them in.
Sadly, the only legal thing to do would be to call the police and FIRST make sure there is an amnesty in place, then ask them to come and get them.

An unregistered handgun is a Prohibited Device, possession of which is punishable under the Criminal Code of Canada. They can not be registered, only surrendered or destroyed.

Run, don't walk, away from this.

BTW, as a first post, this is a pretty sweet "troll" topic.

Be very careful with this.

Prproulx is right.

If the handguns have come into the country from across the border and not been registered, they are illegal.

Do your research on this before you contact the CFC or RCMP. Seriously.

Good luck.

I thought that with the amnesty in place that you can bring in all your un registered guns and they can be registered, isnt that kinda what having an AMNESTY is? waving the legal punishment for doing something? Or does this only apply to the long guns?

No. An amnesty is bring in all your unregistered guns and they will be destroyed.

They clearly state that if the gun can be connected to a crime charges can be laid. In this case the crime is smuggling a prohibited weapon.

Under the amnesty you can only register non-restricted firearms, and only if you have a valid PAL.

prproulx:

Quite a number of pistols have been turned in that are not registered. Without any history where they were first registered, any of them could be smuggled. No one is being charged under those circumstances.

Where people could be charged is where the lab matches a firearm to a crime with respect to ballistics matching.

Umm, I thought you couldn't get a new prohib pistol into the system, not restricted too. When I bought my Colt 1911 it was never registered. The gun was brought in to a gunshop by a widow as it belonged to her husband and she wanted it out of the house. I paid for the gun, it was a longer wait because the gun had to be registered to the gunstore, then transferred to me. It had to be verified, but was allowed into the system.

hmm well lets see: 1st post, asking about a somewhat touchy question on a public board and ghosting yourself to hide that your trolling. Ya I will get right back to you on you question.....see ya.

Erm, I once directed a Prof friend of mine to this website so that he could see if he could legally register his father's handgun that he brought in years ago.... I hope he didnt receive the same welcome... It seems that bringing handguns bought in the US over to Canada was a pretty common occurance a few decades ago...

Ben,

Send me a PM. I will trade you those 3 pistols for a couple of old SMG's that I have lying around. I will meet you under the bridge - that is where you hang out right?

umm alright, Thanks for the serious responses guys, some of you anyway, Im going to get in touch with her uncle and tell him that he has to get rid of the guns even though it means losing his money that they were worth. On a happier note as soon as the government is done with my pal im pretty excited about picking up a new ar and was leaning towards a kimber 1911.

If they are restricted then there should be no big problems. Might take a little time though. If they are prohibited then you are out of luck.

Just file the registration papers and see what happens. Likely they will be registered and you are good to go. Alternately you were forthcoming and if the registration was not successful they will ask for the guns, but I don't see this happening. Some CFO's are very good about this stuff.

I am a ON verifier . If prohib SOL. Nonrestricted or restricted no problem. Took a friend of mine 2 months to receive registrations for a found rifle and handgun. Takes longer if found firearms have ever been registered.

That is good to know! I just assumed they would seize the opportunity to take the gun out of circulation.
