Registering restricted firearms

I have what is no doubt a silly / n00b question, but I've searched the forums trying to find an answer, as well as looked online and can't seem to find a clear one.

If you purchase a restricted firearm online from a dealer.... Any of the many websites I've seen take about online for example, I know the company will handle the process of getting a temporary att to allow the firearm to be mailed to you.

What I'm unclear about is whether they handle everything associated with registering that firearm to you, or whether you still have steps you need to take before and/or after you receive it. If they handle everything... How do you know it's been done?

Sorry again for the stupid question, but just ordered my first restricted and wanna make sure I handle this legally.

Thanks

The company you ordered from starts the transfer process. Once the CFP (Canadian Firearms Program) approves the transfer to you, they will ship the firearm and you will generally receive a tracking number. If you are not home when the delivery is attempted and need to go to the post office to pick up, you will need to call the CFP to acquire a statt (short term authorization to transport) to transport the firearm from the post office to your home. They will require the address of the post office when you call so have that ready. They can and will email the statt to you, print off, go pick up your new baby. Hope that helps.

Thanks. That is helpful. So then I don't need to proceed with registering the gun once I have it in hand because that's already been done? Is that accurate? Will I receive some kind of registration certificate to prove that it's been registered?

I got the tracking number the other day. My firearm should be arriving on Thursday :)

The business you are buying from will not ship the firearm until it is registered in your name, worry not. You'll get a registration cert in the mail from the CFC.
