Let me first say I am a new restricted gun owner, so bear with me if this is a basic question.

I recently received the Registration Certificate for my firearm from the feds. However, for the life of me I can't see anywhere on this document where I need to keep the registration. And, there are small cut out lines around the registration card which looks to me that I need to carry it when I have the firearm with me. So does it go with my RPAL or is should go in that specific gun case? Or do I leave it at home?

Thanks for all you help.

Take a photocopy of it and throw it in your range bag and you need to have it with you everytime you take that restricted out.
Best not to put it in a gun case as its easier to take out to show proof if you ever get stopped.

Criminal Code of Canada, Part III, Section 117.03:

A peace officer who finds

(a) a person in possession of a prohibited firearm, a restricted firearm or a non-restricted firearm who fails, on demand, to produce, for inspection by the peace officer, an authorization or a licence under which the person may lawfully possess the firearm and, in the case of a prohibited firearm or a restricted firearm, a registration certificate for it, […]

may SEIZE the firearm […]

(Sub-Section (2) following allows 14 days for you to produce the missing papers, upon which the police must return your gun.)

You are not required by Law to keep the Certificate in a particular place. But given the quoted bit above, I can think of a few good places to have it. The wallet or gun case you mentioned seem great, but ‘at home’ might lead to that whole CC thing. You can keep a folder to collect all your documents in your range bag. Anything that you're not going to forget. The rest is open to discussion.

Read your authorization to transport. It is a end run out but most ATT require as a condition that you have your registration cert with you during transport. No registration cert in your pocession. Means no valid ATT. No valid ATT means a different charge but still a charge.

Just out of curiosity as it's along the lines of his questioning. Is there anything against laminating the registration certificates? I know there was something about not laminating the paper birth certificates back in the day, so just wondering if that applied here.

Nothing stopping you from laminating them. And there is nothing on ATT's about carrying the certificates. There is also no criminal charge for not having them, the LEO can seize but you have 14 days to show up at the station with your certificate and get the gun back.

Chances to be arrested on your way to the range? <1%
Chances of being asked about guns when arrested? <1%
Chances of the LEO seizing gun after viewing CPIC confirming you are the owner? <1%
So, .0001% chance to have to go down to the station and show a piece of paper to the nice sergeant sitting behind the bulletproof glass.

Don't lose sleep over your certificates, keep them safe at home in your filing cabinet.

I made multiple copies of my registration certificate, I keep one my range bag, one with the restricted firearm, one with my proof of purchase of the firearm, and a copy in my wallet. I know it seems like overkill but I just want to have all the bases covered

How do you prove the gun in your case matches the certificate you just produced without opening the case?

It's this easy, ziplock bag with certificate tucked in gun case.
