I've come accross a few No 4 and No5 rifles that have had the original serial numbers Xd out and another number stamped on the buttsocket. I'll breifly describe a #5 that I have. It is etched on the flat No5Mk1, ROF(F) 3/45 with a "K"series number that has been over stamped with Xs. A "G" series number has been stamped into the buttsocket. The forestock also has the same number stamped into it. It has a second variation bolt that is stamped N S H 5 in the lightening cut on the reinforcing lug and a strange P20001A stamp on the bolt handle which also has a large 26 etched underneath. The bolthead is a 1 and is etched with the crossed flag symbol and 31. It's obviously a rebuild, but a mystery as by whom and why the reserialiseing. It will always be a mystery but any comments and opinions would be appreciated. Sorry I can't send pics. :) bearhunter

Probably Pakistan or India rebuilt them, standard practice for them to scrub markings and remark them.

I see that quite often on sten magwells. The origional number is barred out (but not obliterated) and a new number stamped nearby. I think this was done when a repair required the replacement of the magwell with a recycled component. I have also seen a SMG C1 similarily remarked.
One sten I restored (as a dewat of course) had a 7L###X serial number on it, but lightly barred over was the 0L18 serial number. Needless to say, it is now restored as the earlier version.

as far as Pakistan or India are concerned, I agree, but I forgot to mention that this rifle doesn't have a reinforceing bolt through the forend, so I ruled them out. I've been wrong before and will be again and maybe am now, so thanks for the comments, very much appreciated. Any more ideas would be appreciated. One of the emails I received suggested Malaysia, Turkey or maybe one of the Arabic nations, but there aren't any markings to indicate this.:) bearhunter
