Has anyone used Rel 17 in .308? I received some load data from Walt Berger that included Rel 17. It seems to produce some good velocities but I wondered about the accuracy. I have never used it so I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has. What bullet weight, primer, powder, etc. do you use? I would use it for the 168 gr. and the 185 gr. bullet primarily. Thanks.

I just today loaded up some .308 167gr Lapua Scenars for a ladder test. I used Varget for the majority of them but I also loaded some corresponding weights of RL17. Hopefully I'll get the chance to shoot them over my chronograph tomorrow and come back with a report.

I doubt you would see any difference with the 168's but you might with the heavier(175 and up) bullets.Probably see the most difference with anything over 190.

Rugerman,
I think you will see higher velocities, I've been looking at a variety of load data for Re 17 in various calibres and the vast majority of reloaders have seen velocities increase from 50 to 200 fps! Of these results the average seems to be 50 to 100 fps.
As for accuracy, people are reporting very good accuracy but then again, most of these rifles are customs and shoot most loads well.
In any event I have a bunch of Re 17 and will be trying it in my .260 AI tomorrow and in my 7wsm probably next week.
BTW, do you have the powder yet? It is very hard to find in Canada still, at least around here.
Good luck, I think it will work out for you.

Great stuff, guys. Yes, I do have a pound which, as mentioned, I have never used before. Based on what I have seen here so far and the data from Walt Berger I am going to set up some loads in some 185gr and 168 gr. and try them out at 3-500 m. Will let you know what happens and will try and chrony them as well. Thanks Ivo et al.

I tried it in 308 with 168 TSX. Could not get enough powder in the case to get decent velocity. With heavier bullets it works better in the 308, even making the 210gr. viable. Works well in the 260 and 284 though!

Its a great powder with the heavier bullets for velocity and accuracy...

...but temperature stability is pretty poor.

I have found nothing that will shoot 210 gr. bullets faster...

Here is a report for RL-17 with the 210's: http://tinyurl.com/yjk48ep
