Hi there, I'm the new owner of a wby accumark in 340 wby

The previous owner sent me some load data but unfortunatly, I need to find another load quickly because I can't find the bullets he used on the shelves at my local gunshop. I'm going moose hunting in a few weeks and I don't have time to order them.

I can get barnes tipped TSX 210 gr. at a good price. They have a decent B.C and I heard good things about them.

I just checked on the barnes website and they list 90.5 gr of RL-19 as the max load, this seems mighty high, as nosler lists 89.5 gr of RL-22 as the max load for their 210 grain partition !!

Just curious if someone else could double check that load in the barnes manual. Thus is my first time using barnes products and I dont have the manual, yet !

Also, If you have any tips / favorite loads please let me know. I never reloaded for a big magnum, so I'm kind of nervous because I need to find a decent moose hunting load in the next 2 weeks

thanks

Martin

i used the 340 weatherby for years , i used speer grande slam bullets 250 gr. with 215 federal primers, 85 grs of imr-7828 , weatherby cases, shot moose and mule deer with this load , if you put the bullet in the lungs they go down right now!!! with that load, i still have a couple recovered bullets , but dont know how to post them , send your email address i will send pictures ,,wade

Not sure the monolithic Barnes slips down a bore quite as easily as a lead core, which swages a bit. I think the newer Barnes with the triple grooves ares supposed to correct that, (less bearing surface, less friction resistance) but I would maybe try a few slightly off the 90.5 just to be sure.

I ended up using the 210 g Nosler Partition bullet with my Mark V. Found two loads that worked well: F215 primer and 89 g Reloader 22 or 85.5 grains of IMR 4831. With the 250 grain Hornady spire point I found 90 grains of IMR 7828 to work in my rifle. Both loads shot about one MOA (3 shots) in my rifle give or take a bit. I preferred the 210 grain bullet myself partly because of the heavy recoil from the 250, though this was a problem mostly during testing. The 250 grainer was bordering on uncomfortable to test for any length of time. Did some testing with 225 grain Hornady rounds as a compromise but haven't entered data into my book for some reason.

thanks a lot everybody

Back from the range, my max load was 88.5 gr of rl-19 with no pressure signs . It grouped in a bit less than 1 inch. This will be my hunting load for this year. hope to have a chance to try the barnes on a big bull next week.

As a bonus, the accumark is a pleasure to shoot with the 210 gr bullets

Shouldn't be any trouble with the bullet. My friend put a 180 grain Barnes X through both shoulders of a big royal. The bullet was just under the skin on the other side. There was 176 grains of bullet left. A piece of one petal of the expanded part of the bullet had come off. I found that 210 grain Nosler bullet to hit like a ton of bricks on a big bull moose. The retention in this case was just under 70%. RL 19 is kind of an interesting powder for the 340. I thought RL 22 might be a bit better with the case having a fair amount of room and RL 22 being a bit slower and all. As I recall though, RL 19 did yield more velocity in some reports.

I had a brand new can of rl-19 so I figured I would give it a try since it is one of the 2 powders listed on the barnes site for that bullet and since I'm at the last minute, I figured it would do the job.

What a great caliber. this thing is so much fun to shoot. I cant wait to see what it does on moose.

The 340 does it all, that's for sure. I guess one disadvantage of the cartridge is that it isn't legal in some parts of Africa. At least it didn't used to be. From that point of view I remember considering 375 H&H, or bigger, before buying mine. No regrets though.

What a great cartridge! Trajectory of a .270 with the hitting power of a .375!Mine puts 3 into .88" with 225gr TSX's in front of 90gr. RL22, Velocity = 3060fps. Hope you flatten a moose!
