Relative burn rate, barrel harmonics, and velocity

I was wondering if a powder with a burn rate similar to one I'm using could be substituted in a way to reduce time and material tuning a new load. I'm thinking if I have a good load with 7828 and want to change to Retumbo can I just load up 5 rounds with charges increasing in one grain increments run them across the Chrony and the closest vel to my tuned load is my start point. Has anyone tried this or something similar?
 
208 and up. Probably 210 Sierras or Bergers. If the A-Max's I have shoot well I may just stick with them. I've just had no luck with A-Max bullets. It's to the point where I'm getting ready to load up some A-Max 208's and instead I grab the 200 gr SMK's. Now that I know it can shoot I'm having anxiety over wasting bore life shooting A-Max's. Maybe I'm making a subtle mistake seating them or something. I just know that the A-Max isn't on my list of .224 cal bullets anymore.

I did about the same thing you are looking to do in my 300wm. I started with a load for a 220gn RN, cut it back a bit and worked up until I found a load I liked. I personally never saw pressure signs and honestly didn't try to get it high enough that I did. With Retumbo if you have a short throat you will be compressing powder by the 71gn mark, I have a longer throat in my 110BA savage so I got powder compression at about 75.5gn. These are my loads, in my rifle and I do not suggest you take them as gosple or load data.

Stick with the 208 amax, you will probably like it once you find a load with retumbo. 0.03" off the lands worked for me, any longer and concentricity became an issue with the short neck on the 300wm case, Again, in my rifle...

Perhaps Dthunter can chime in with his 210 berger load success?
