Reliability with 10/22 short barrels?

8.5" is getting short..never mind the outrageous cost of a custom made barrel of that length, you'd have to modify a stock and i doubt it would be pretty. And it will be quite a bit louder.

They should still cycle right down to about 4" in length, you'll need earplugs at that length though

The krinker plinker owners never seemed to have any gripes about their 8 inch barrels.

The shortest I have tried is 16 inches. No troubles or appreciable volume increase.

I have seen confiscated "rifles" cut down past 8 inches. Cant say I have had a chance to fire them though.

I remember reading on Rimfire Central that 16" (or maybe it was 16.5") was the optimum barrel length for a .22cal rifle.

I have used 10/22 variations with barrels way shorter than 8.5",
with no "cyling/reliability" issues with select ammo
(no subsonic, no target or other ammo that would
suposedly produce lower pressures).

However, if the barrel gets shorter than about 6",
depending on the ammo,
a radiused bolt and a good (proven) extractor
are highly recommended
to ensure "cyling/reliability" as you put it.

Also, barrels with tight match chambers may go
against the idea of cycling in a reliable manner.

10/22 variations with barrels of 5" or shorter
may require messing with the tension of the recoil spring
and are quite sensitive concerning the ammo.

At about 2.2"-2.5" the 10/22 would require
all of the above, an even lower tension spring,
plus additional weight in the bolt
(a block of lead, wolfram or tungsten).
Finding the right balance between the spring tension
and the additional weight is a real PITA.

But, at 8.5" it should cycle ok without any mods
and with a lot of ammo brands IMO.
Accuracy, on the other hand, will require
trying many ammo brands.
