Hi.
Possibilities of cartridge 7.62x39 and length of bullet(1.05''-1.32'') - does enable to make reload of heavy bullets from 150 gr.to 220gr.-240gr..
Question-who did do that reload of heavy bullets?
Opinions and recommendations interesting.
Thank you for an answer.

Heavier bullets

I have regularly loaded 135 and 150 grain bullets in the 7.62x39. They feed well through the SKS but you have to start low and work upwards until you have a load that will work.

The 150 grain load works well for the few deer that I did shoot with one, but I prefer a larger cartridge, such as the .308 Winchester, for big game use.

The 135 grain bullets shoot well, but are a bit thinner jackets, being designed more for varmint hunting. Never tried one on a deer, although the thinner jacket may be an advantage due to the lower velocity.

As mentioned you have to start low and work up when using bullet weight in the 150 and up range not much load data out there. The Lee manual has data for 150 gr. bullet.

I like the Prvi Partizan 150 gr. RNBT the cannelure is in the correct place when crimped to give you an OAL of 2.200" I also use the Speer 150 gr. Hot-Cor and Sierra 150 gr. Pro Hunter both in .311,neither has a cannelure just seat them to 2.200" and use a light to med, crimp with the Lee FCD.

Reloader #7 works well with any of the 150 gr. bullets the MAX load in the Lee manual is 24.8 grs. I get good accuracy with just 24.0 grs. even. Groups average about 1" at 50 yds. with the iron sight and my old eyes make a great bush buster rd.

I have also used quiet a few of the Bulgarian 187 gr. .310.5 FMJ bullet I pulled form surplus 54r ammo that I converted to hunting ammo. In my test I found that 18.0 grs. RL#7 produced the best accuracy just at 2" at 50 yds. the bullet does shoot about 4" low with sights zeroed for 123 gr. ammo. I seated the bullet to 2.200" which goes above the cannelure but is still below the ogive of the bullet and on the flat bearing surface of the longer bullet love that Lee FCD.

The Hornady manual also has load data for 150 to 155 gr. bullets however there .308 and in SKS and AK barrel that generally run anywhere from .310 to .313 groove to groove accuracy and MV may suffer more than normal. I've tried some 30-30 FN .308 bullets in my Chinese and Yugo SKS and accuracy was not good at all.

Good groups.
On 100 meters turns out 2" ?

Well in my part of the country you don't get many 100 yds. shots a big game,I live in a pretty densely wooded environment. The majority of my hunting is done for tree stands or ground blinds as far a big game goes so at the most 75 yds. is a long shot.

In general though your theory is correct, when I do get the occasion to do some longer range shooting with some of my buddies I found most of my reloads with light to med weight bullets as well as cast to shoot around 2" at 100 yds.

That PRIVI bullet looks very interesting. Who is your source for them? What is the expansion like at 7.62x39 velocities?

I purchased mine from Graf & Sons,I bought about 500 a couple years ago because I use them in my Mosin 54r also. The bullets are still on the books but are currently out of stock. They expand well at X39 velocity as long as you keep the range around 100 yds. after that velocity tends to drop off and expansion is iffy but it's still much better that the Wolf 154 gr. SP steel jacket bullets from what I've seen. The heavier grain bullet are really design for rifle with a bit hight MV but they will work in the SKS if you keep the range short and use good shot placement.

A little better look at the bullet profile,do you guys up in ca have access to Prvi Partizan component brass and bullets?
