Hi!

I shot the Quebec provincial on sateurday, with my 1911 S&W, 5 inches barrel, my load are remington brass with winchester LP 5.9 grains of HP38 and a 200 gr Frontier plated bullet, ovreaal lenght is 1.245, crimp at .469. allload on a Dillon 550, The reloading manual of Hogdon say I shall be doing around 900FPS, but at my surprise at the chrono test I was doing an average of 749..So I was shooting minor...I know, we shall always test our load, but don't have access to a chrono, and to used one at my shooting range, it is a real pain. Do you guys get any sugeestion how to get major with 200 grais , cos I really like the vision of these well cut holes on a Target, easier to see at my age:) or should I change my load all over and start with 230 grains. any recipe to suggest??

Thank you all

By the way, that was my First provincial, was really fun, and for the first time, was able to run at the target in every way.

Part of your problem is the manuals for reloading .45acp usually test their loads using either fixed barrels or a pistol. By using a revolver you lose some velocity due to the gap between the cylinder and barrel. Over my F1 Chrono 200 gr FMJ Montana Gold bullets over 6.4 gr Win 231 gave me Avg Vel. of 891 fps our of my 1911. PF was 178. Given the expected drop in velocity (Revolver vs pistol) this load should get you over the threshold of 165.

If it were me I would go with 230 gr jacketed or lead boolits as felt recoil should be less using the heavier bullet.

I have a spreadsheet I have maintained that you might find interesting using various loads shot over my Chrony. PM me your email address and I will be happy to send it down to you.

Take Care

Bob

Never use the loading manuals for velocity. You have to run the ammo over a chrono using your gun, and do it at different temperatures. You will be surprised.

Looks like you would have to use about 6.9 grains of powder to get major of 175. i would suggest you look at changing your powder. a quivk look at Lyman Reloading book 46th edition would suggest that 231 would be a goo dload. 5.8 grains is listed 902 so that should make or be close to major in your gun. a quick look at the winchster site shows the following:

200 GR. CAST LSWC 200 WST .451" 1.225" 4.4 830 15,400 PSI 5.1 910 19,900 PSI
200 GR. FPJ 200 WST .451" 1.275" 4.7 825 16,400 PSI 5.3 890 20,000 PSI
200 GR. JHP 200 WST .451" 1.275" 4.7 820 16,900 PSI 5.2 885 19,900 PSI

so it looks like about 5.1 grains will make major for you. maybe even 5.0.

i hope that helps.

There is nothing wrong with 200 grains bullet. You want to make sure you meet the major power factor? DO NOT rely on what the reloading manual says. Invest on an affordable Chrono. You can buy a brand new Shooting Chrony for just over a $100.00 Cdn. One of the best investment you can buy..... a ballistic chronograph. :)

Good Luck, reload safely.
