Reload Rookie

Hey;

OK...I searched and searched but I can't figure this one out.

I know the RL 550B will reload a ton of handgun calibers with the right kits, but will it reload .308?

The wife shoots 9MM and am heading to a 308 prior to going to a .50

Is there a press that will do both? (not the .50, pretty sure that's a custom set)

I don't mind spending a few bucks to get something flexible and hassle free, but I don't want' something so easy that I won't learn anything either (the ACME Robotic loader LOL)

Also...is there a primer (no pun intended) that will give me a bacjground on loading? Not actually HOW to load, but the theory behind BC etc?

If I am headed to the bookstore, any recommendations on reloading books?

I never fails...I search a few times more after I search for ..like...an hour...and POP! THERES THE ANSWER!

i've got 3 lee 1000- 1 in9, 1 in 45, and 1 in 223- got a dillon 550 in 308- don't really feel you can call the 550 a progressive as you have to flip that star wheel for each operation- it's really more of a semi-progressive-one step up from the turret with the auto-index

Basically, the 550 is the most versatile machine from Dillon, you can load mostly everything in rifle to pistol calibers. If you shoot many caliber is would be the way to go over a 650 because the conversion kits are cheaper, and there are more available.

You aren't likely to find reloading manuals in a bookstore. A gunshop is more likely to have them. I have a Sierra and a Hornady. Most any current edition manual will supply the information you need. There are specialty books as well which deal with loading for extreme precision. A number of single stage presses can handle .50, and some can also load smaller cartridges as well.

I just ordered the Lyman loading manual. Seems to get good reviews here as a first manual in the old library

Currently will only need to load 9MM for the wifes Browning and 308 for my first rifle, but I seriously doubt we will be limited to that for the rest of our shooting careers.

At some point I want to go to 50 cal, but that's a little down the road. The next caliber I will probably need to load will be .40 or 10mm for my pistol.
