With Dillon 650.

Damn, it was easy!

Using Frontier 124gr 9mm CMJ FP, 4gr 231, OAL 1.120". I want go do more, but let's see how this batch goes with my P226. Maybe I will with different specs.

Question: For those who reload with Dillon progressive, have you noticed that a tiny bit of power bounces out of case when the turret rotates to next stage?

Anyone have an ideal load for accurate target shooting with 231 powder?

Thanks!

The 650 is sweet isn't it!!
I found that slowing down on the down stroke at the point when the shell plate gets turned spills less powder.
I use 4 gns of W231 as well and have found that velocity and accuracy are affected by the amount of crimp I apply to the bullet. Experiment with the crimp a bit. In the 5th hole I have a Lee carbide factory crimp die, it not only crimps it, but ensures that all the ammo I produce will chamber easily as well.
I love my 2 650's.

Cool! At the crimp area, I'm getting a .377 or .378 reading. Same as factory American Eagles. What is the width at your crimp?

Being a noob, what worries me the most is OAL. I think 1.120 is fine. Any idea how high I can go with 231 at 1.118-1.1120 OAL? You're using Frontier 124gr bullets, right? I'm going to stop reloading now until I can fire this batch of 100rds.

I had the same issue of "powder bounce". I started to use case lube on my brass. I would just take a cardboard tray (like the kind you get when you buy a two-four of beer).....lay a bunch of brass inside the tray. Make sure they all lay down flat. Then use the Lymans Case lube spray. Only need a couple of seconds of spray. Let sit for 10 min. You can shake the tray a bit to help spread the lube all over the other cases. Load them up. I always tumble the loaded ammo, to remove the case lube and shine up the finished product.

One other bit of advice.....Chamber Check all your reloaded ammo before shooting. I find that my CZ Shadow likes to eat short 9mm (1.08"). Anything longer & she won't feed. Just remove the barrel from your 226, and drop in a round. Make sure it easily feeds into the chamber to the correct depth. Your also looking for easy removal.

There a spring loaded ball bearing that snaps the shell plate into it's next position...clip a coil off the spring and it should soften up the action a bit.

Thanks for the info all!

I picked up the Lee FCD from smacdonald. This die is GREAT compared to Dillon crimp die! In my first batch, I had 7 out of 100 that didn't go all the way into case gauge, however chambered when I took barrel out of Sig P226.

Anyhow. the FCD eliminated this annoyance, even though I read it's actually okay as long as it chambers actual barrel properly. Don't matter. I'm such a noob I don't want to take any chances.

I reloaded another batch of 100. 4.2gr, 1.135-8 OAL. I'm still worried about seating bullet in too much. I sure wish there is a good recipe out there that I can work with for Sig P226 (I posted another subject but no replies yet). No more reloading until I fire these rounds off. :)
