Reloading 12 guage non toxic shells for Old fixed choke guns

I don't know that it will be feasible until bismuth shot comes available again. I certainly won't be running steel through my AyA.

I was thinking of loading some bismuth shells this fall for waterfowl, but the supply of shot dried up and I ended up moving, so I didn't get out hunting at all anyway.

There is a little bit of data on the Hodgdon loading data webpage, and Ballistic Products has a manual on loading of Bi shot for a couple of bucks. Will Bilozir has it, too, I saw some on his table at the Calgary gun show yesterday.

A big issue is the cost of Bismuth. It was 5$/lb in Dec 06, around $16/lb in Sept 07 and is now around $11/lb.

Manufacturing bismuth shot is difficult because it needs to be cast instead of dropped from a shot tower as with lead.

Sooo, at $16/lb that is $1 per oz, for the RAW METAL... So you can at least double that for finished shot (not loaded shells)

So if someone is selling Bismuth shot at a gun show for less than $150 for the 7 lb containers, it would be a great deal....

Note, I am now shooting Kent Tungsten Matrix for my nice old shotguns.

Now, if you are still looking for a manual for loading Bismuth Shot, go to Precision Reloading

For Geese I can't help you but for ducks, I am usuing #6 steel out of an Extra Full choke and I love it.

If Bismuth comes down a bit more I would love to load some up. I still have some TM left over from a few years back but at $35/10 I use it very sparingly.

Keep in touch with Will Bilozur, as he is setting up to manufacture bismuth shot in Alberta. He may also be able to sell you tungsten-matrix shot, as a BPI distributor. I have an order in for a piece of his first batch of Bi#5, whenever it should appear.

hi
was using steel this fall(reloads) with 3/4 oz and buffered. ran full and extra full chockes. desity and patterning was super. wacked geese and ducks with this load and it rocks.
It is in the r.s handbook,800x powder, 329gr of shot,(i run 300 gr) and buffer. because of the buffered column you are not forcing a solid column of shot and either the shot has to move out of the way or the choke has to give way.the buffered shot is suspending the shot in the column(wad) add gives as it passes the choke, also gives longer range, feels like rifle style shooting sometimes.
hope this helps, and he told me that bismuth in bar form to make shot was expected soon.

Anyone have a good recipe for reloading some bismuth .I'm sick of steel and not that I'm rich or something but..... I'm done with it ( steel that is ).Plus I want to start using my old Dbl . I use to re-load lead but that was a long time ago now . Any help would be a big help. Remember " If your not behind our troops get in front "
