So I'm reloading for my Ruger American Ranch rifle in 223/5.56 and I'm loading 55 grain Hornady SP bullets. In the past I've loaded a variety of loads in a Savage WV that I had and always used my Lyman manual for specs, OAl etc.
This time as I feel I've come a bit along the way I decided to go with the actual COAL and CBTO lengths using the Hornady OAL gauge etc.
So the Lyman manual tells me that the OAL for this cartridge should be 2.260". After measuring for this rifle with the Hornady OAL gauge and comparator I came up with these measurements....My CBTO measurement after many reps basically came out to 1.825" minus .02 ending up with 1.805 CBTO. COAL ends up at 2.134". Fits into the mag easily and is way under the Lyman length..The bullet seats a bit visually close to the ogive but not to give me real concern however how deep can the bullet seat without concern for pressures.. When I look at some of my snap caps it doesn't seem too deep.
Do these numbers seem normal, average etc?

Your Lengths seem short.

Do you know your ogive to lands distance? I would determine that distance and work back ... In my 223 I am about 15/1000 off the lands. Accuracy is great and the load in to MDT mags with no problems.

I load the 55gr Hornady SP w/ cannelure in my Ruger 223. I seat it to 2.282" OAL (base of cartridge to tip of bullet), on my Hornady comparator with the 22cal insert that is 1.941" (base to ogive)
