Funny how "... most vendors .... may even take a little pleasure in 'putting one over'.." seems a reasonable defence for less than honest dealing - oh, because after all, we must teach humility to the newbies. But, if someone on this forum hears a retail clerk express a view that disagrees with the forum member's own, frequently erroneous ideas, then it is fair to slag the store, the chain, and gun stores in general.
One thing I do know. If I felt a retail outlet was trying to put one over on me,or a novice I was introducing to the sport, in order to "teach a little humility", well, I would never darken their doors again. Same kinda goes for gun shows. Buyer beware. But retail depends on repeat customers.
