Who out there shoots a Colt thunderer with BP? In looking for some advice as to what kind of loads is shoud use. I know a few folks that shoot 41 LC in SAA's and New Police models but those have heavier cylinders and frames than the thunderer and will undoubtedly handle a hotter load. Any suggestions as to where i should start with loading the 41 lC for the thunderer? Remember...im using black powder (trailboss is impossible to get ahold of here)

I loaded pyrodex in the 41 long colt and made up a scoop from a cut down 41 colt case to hold a case almost full of Pyro to alow for the bullet to set down ontop of the Pyrodex.
you want no air space inside the case with BP thats the main thing.

If your useing modern solid head cases (starline) and not balloon head cases or semi balloon head then you should be fine with filling the case up to the bullet seated depth.
Ya want the bullet to slightly compress the powder so theres no air space.
 
From what ive read the method you describe should give between 18 and 20 grains of BP. I loaded a few up last night...the majority with 14 grains BP. i seated the bullet a little deeper in the case...just enought to compress the powder a couple of mm. i loaded 2 rounds with 18 grains - this filled the case nicely...just enough so that the bullet compressed it very nicely. My thoughts were to start with the 14 grain loads and see how the 18 grain loads feel in the gun. My biggest worry is blowing the top strap off the gun. Remember that the lightnings and thunderers have very thin cylinder walls.

anyone out there shot pyrodex in a thunderer?
 
I'm sure Buff. arms has the brass or anyone that sells **starline**, you are safe with your Thunderer if you use FFFG or FFG and fill case so that the seating of the bullet just pushes down the powder(very slight comp.), as mentioned above, NO AIRSPACE,if the gun can't take that, it can't take nuthin'!
