Does it matter if you use large pistol primers instead of large pistol magnum primers? Shooting a lever action Marlin 1894 with 20in barrel. Most of my reloading books call for magnum primers. I will be using Campro 240gn jacketed bullets or similar and using up my old powders IMR4227, Accurate #9, SR4759, HS7 and Unique. I mostly use regular small pistol primers for 357Mag but presently use small pistol magnum because it was all they had. What is a good all round powder for 9mm, 38spl, 357Mag and 44Mag?

I use large pistol primers in my 44 Blackhawk and 45Colt lever gun. For 240/250gr I find Alliant 2400 cleaner than H110. Heavier bullets I would go with H110/W296.

It depends on the powder. For 4227 and H110 I would use magnum. In both cases I've tried regular and they were crap. Wouldn't cycle my deagle and the bullets were keyholing. You might have different results in a rifle.

For other powders you should be ok with normal.

If you want to use a single powder for all your handgun loads, Titegroup and Universal are probably your best bets. HP38 and CFE Pistol are also very versatile. Titegroup is very economical. Don't expect maximum loads in magnum cartridges with any of these powders though.

Don't seem to have a problem getting 1400fps out of my 7 1/2" Blackhawk with LP primers, 240gr XTP or Campro and H110. That won't cycle your "Deage" eh? No keyholing for me.

Didn't even ignite all the powder. CCI LPP. Switched to CCI LMPP and haven't looked back since. Maybe other brands of non-magnum are hotters. Also tried magnum primers with TG, and there was a pressure spike but not enough gaz to cycle.

I use Federal #150 Large Pistol Primer, 22.5 gr of IMR 4227, Campro 240 gr TMJ and average 1358 fps out of my 12" barrel Henry Big Boy lever action. This gives me 1/2" groups at 50 yards.

I've used CCI standard and magnum and Winchester standard and magnum and never noticed a difference with H110/W296. Mine are also for a Marlin 1894. I had some fraction-of-a-second hangfires with mouse-fart loads and standard primers but never issues with magnum loads.

I've never tried Campro but Berry's plated bullets couldn't be shot at magnum velocities without tumbling or flying several feet off target at 50yds. If I used .44 special data in .44 magnum brass it seemed to work. Never had issues with .429 jacketed bullets (Hornady, Speer, Nosler, etc.) at magnum velocities. I couldn't get cast to work without powder coating them.

You wont find a powder that'll work for 9mm, .38spcl, .357mag, and .44mag that will by anything close to a full magnum in the latter two. I love CFE Pistol for 9mm and it works great in .38spcl as well. For .357 and .44 mag I use H110/W296 for full power loads but do have a pound of Alliant 2400 sitting in my cabinet I have as of yet to try. I have a few pounds of SR-4759 I've tried in .44 mag rifle loads and it worked very well. I was saving it for cast rifle loads but I don't shoot many of those anymore with IPSC, IDPA, 2-gun, and long range rifle taking up most of my time.

I have found no difference between standard, magnum or Winchester (both) large pistol primers using IMR4227 or H110 powders for .44 magnum. I've tried HP38 in both 9mm and .44mag; works great for 9mm but did not like it at all for the .44. The cases were very hard to extract and the recoil impulse was especially harsh. With the Campro 240s seated at the recommended 1.600" OAL, the cases will crimp into the cannelure nicely.

I use winchester primers as they are rated as LP/LPM. Out of my Miroku 1892 I am getting good accuracy with 23gr of H110 or 6.7 gr HP38, campro 240gr bullets well crimped. Never any ignition problems, good burn and added bonus is they two loads hit to same point of impact out to 150m.

That's the best thing about h110/296 the big fire ball, but my go to load for plain king in 44 mag is 22.5gr imr 4227 with a wlpp, with a 240gr campro, case doesn't matter, good thing about imr 4227, I don't think you count compress enough in the case for an over pressure
