Has anyone pulled the czech fmj 127 grain bullets out of their cases and tried replacing them with british .303 bullets (.311 dia.) in a corresponding weight to powder ratio, for hunting rounds.
I loaded 150gr .311 Sierra's on top of 21gr IMR4198 in the 7.62x39 and they all went into pretty much one hole at 50 yards.I don't know of any .311 /125gr factory bullets to swap with military bullets? Harold
At $.17/rnd for surplus ammo + $.35/rnd approx. for hunting bullets, I am wondering if anyone has worked up any loads using the surplus powder and the already primed steel surplus cases.
Barnes also makes 123gr hunting rounds. I got them, and brass from Mystic Precision.
Just switching the bullets and using the steel cases works fine too. But I like reloadable brass, if I'm not shooting a whole lot in one day. Be a hassle to have to clean after only one shot.
I want to see a loadup where someone took x39 powder and transferred the correct amount of powder from an x39 cartridge to a brass x54r case along with the x39 bullet. That would end the x54r shortage immediately.
well, I use the surplus factory rounds in my SKS. I rough zero with the FMJ, then pull 40 tips and replace with 125gr Sierra Game King (.311). The fire for zero check and go hunting. Lasts me a couple of years. Last year I was concerned about further distances so I pulled an FMJ and replaced it with a 150gr Sierra Game King, original charge, original steel case. DEFINITE pressure signs!! I took our 2gr of powder for the next one and it gave me what I wanted. No pressure signs and good accuracy. Killed a moose with it. I will handload for my Remington 799 and I bought Prvi brass.
