Anyone know where I can get a few boxes of non corrosive non fmj ammo with brass cases for my svt40? If not I would be ok with fmj. I just want like 40 rounds.

Trade-Ex has MilSpec 7.62x54R factory-fresh unfired brass at $65/100.

Perfect for changing-over loads into from all that corrosive surplus ammo.

For best accuracy, try a .311" or .312" slug.

Hope this helps.

X2 pretty much exactly the same thoughts.

Both S&B and PRVI make really good brass for loading if you go the pre-rolled commercial ammunition route. About 20 -22 bucks a box is a reasonable price by todays prices. If you keep to 150gr loads, as Smellie said, you won't have to resight when switching to surplus loads. Try to keep your gas setting on your SVT to the minimum that works, the SVT can rip apart any and all brass.

Try slugging your barrel to make sure its not tight ( I doubt it) then load with .312 diameter bullets. I have better success in EVERY x54 rifle I own. About 52 grains of 4350 powder seems to be about the magic number for OCW loads in most guns.

On a slightly different note, If you're not happy with the time and effort to have your brass destroyed by your SVT40, you can buy MFS rounds in soft points for about the same cost of reloading.

Do anyone know of a store near the GTA that sells privi 7.62 x 54r?

I can vouch for the mfs 203 grain soft point. Shoots a little high, but groups well.

Cheers

Do what smellie says. I reload PRVI brass for my mosins with hornady .312 bullets. Al simmons has PRVI factory ammo. I have had good results with the 123 grain hornadys over 50 grains of 4350.

This caliber is getting more popular every month with all the Mosins and Svt40s on the market, shouldn't be too hard to find locally.

The 203 gr soft points shoot high at 50 yards but not at 150, as it should be. I like to test fire at 50 yard increments out to 200 before I make any sight adjustments. Those are my hunting limits in the bush with open irons. I'm quite pleased with 200gr MFS and LVE soft points, although my hand loading does tighter groups.

Lots of good info here.

I've had good results with 150 and 174 grain .312 bullets in my mosin. I'm using 42-43 grains of IMR4895 which is giving me MOA accuracy if I do my part.

I also shoot tons of cast 180 grain bullets sized to .311 with a gas check. I load those with 14 grains of red dot and find that they are a very accurate 200 yard plinking round.

I bought several boxes of 7.62x54r privi ammo at wolverine supply, but most of my privi brass has been found at gun shows as factory ammo. Infact I just picked up 2 boxes of Lapua match grade ammo at the last show I was at.

I really like the 7.62x54r round as it seems to load up with the same supplies as my .303 chambered rifles.

7.62x54r brass is out there if you keep your eyes peeled for it.

I just bought an SVT 40. I've loaded hundreds of rounds (mostly cast) for my Moisant Nagants. I have no intentions of shooting cast in the SVT 40 but I was wondering what other reloaders were using in their semi auto's. I've only put 5 rounds through mine and loads were not heavy enough to cycle the action. Fluted chamber didn't chew brass up too badly. Don't know about dented cases on ejection as I didn't get that far. Was using pulled 180 gr FMJ's over starting load of 4064.

I picked up MFS and LVE from Westrifle a season or two back. In batches of 250/500 it was about 50 cents per shot, and I don't care about the case. I think I load them for about 50 or 55 cents. Unless I'm loading for one specific rifle, its not worth the bother. You can get MFS in 150 gr as well.

I'd like to find someone local to split another batch of 500 soft points with me.
