NOTE: NEWBEE at reloading

Can anyone suggest a good cheap powder for 9mm target shooting? I was looking and Winchester 231 seems to be what I am heading for unless someone with more experience can suggest some thing better

I use tightgroup with 115 grain bullet.

The poweders listed above are great choices because they are covered in most reloading manuals.

Which manual are you using?

231 and TG works great for everything I have loaded in 9MM. I have also used HS-6 with 9MM in 115 through to 147Gr with no problems, but the gr values are higher for the loads (6.0Gr+) where as 231 and TG will both have a lower charge therefore you will get more rounds per keg of powder (if that is a factor for ya)

FWIW I have settled on a 147Gr CMJ and 3.5Gr TG load for my general plinking 9. Accurate in my P226 and G19 so thats good enough for me. I am halfway done filling up the first .50 CAL can (turret press not progressive :)

Hello Backthorne
Like I said NEWBee, my press is still in the mail, I should have it this weekend lee pro 1000 9mm kit, I got the 9mm reloading manual that came with it and I am still looking for 1 or 2 more reloading manuals as I have been told not to trust just 1. any ideas on manuals? Thank for everyone’s help

231 and Titegroup both meter well out of my Dillon Powder measure which is important to me. I think HS-6 and Unique maybe better powders for the 9MM but Unique at least doesn't flow consistantly enough through my powder measure so I pretty much stick to 231. All the powders you mentioned will work well in the 9MM.

Take Care

The cheapest powder is the IMR 700X, but it has some metering issues. When using less than 4 grains it has a tendency to short change some cases. Squib
I use W-231 for my 9MM now because it meters consistently. You set it for what ever powder charge you want and it throws it to within 1/10 of a grain every time.
I’ve tried Bullseye, Unique, WSF, WST, 700X and W-231 and of them all, I like W-231 the best.

Promo

I like Alliant's PROMO powder. It is cheaper than IMR's 700X. PROMO is like RedDot. It currently sells for C$95.00 per 8 pound keg, which works out to around C$13.54 a pound. That's cheap.
With a cast lead 130TC bullet and considerably less than 4 grains of powder I can consistenly get 1050 fps. Perfect target load.

"...target shooting..." Formal competitive target shooting or just shooting because it's fun? There are match grade bullets available, but they're jacketed. Sierra and Remington both make one.
Shooting jacketed bullets gets prohibitively expensive in a hurry.
3.5 to 4.8 grains of Bullseye is good for a 121 grain cast bullet. Oddly the same range is good for a 124 grain jacketed bullet too. Hard cast or swaged bullets will shoot better than regular cast bullets.

W231 is slower than Tightgroup. For less than max loads I use Tightgroup because it is cleaner burning. Both of them meter well.

Using under 4 grains per load will make about 2,000 rounds.

News update I have my bench, my press and powder. I have W231 and titegroup, i am going to try them both. But I can't find any reload data for 115gr CMJ (copper platted) with titegroup. Can anyone tell me what they use?
How my Gr From what i can find it looks like 3.9 min and 4.3 max is this possible?
