I have been saving up brass to start reloading for 9mm. I already have 40 cal underway. I have not purchased the 9mm firearm yet and was tossing around the idea of pistol vs. rifle. I would like to purchase a CX4 Storm with the non-restricted barrel.

The question:
My reloading data is typically for a 4" barrel. How does the long barrel of the Storm affect reloading pressures? Does a fired cartidge in the 9mm reach full pressure prior to it exiting the 4" barrel? Is there data for this specific rifle?

I currently have BDX 9mm 124grain FMJ bullets to start with.

It's a bit of a crapshoot when you switch to a rifle barrel, vs a pistol barrel. In some combinations, your velocity will increase. In others it may actually decrease.

One consideration for unlocked blowback guns is some combinations do not work well. If you try to push lighter bullets with lots of slow burning powder behind it to boost velocity, you may blow the case as the bolt opens before the pressure drops.

I have had my 9MM Storm now for a month or so. In developing loads to make 150 PF I found you gain about 150 - 200 fps with the longer 16" barrel over the same loads shot in a pistol. You won't gain any more with an 18". The slower the powder the more the gain to a point.

One of my favourite loads for IDPA is 4.1 gr of 231 under my Lyman 356402 cast bullet. It makes 130 PF out of my pistols and runs 155 - 160 out of the Beretta.

From talking to the guys over on the Cast bullet forum the consensus is you will gain velocity out to 11" of barrel length.

If you are loading only for the Storm try the Medium to slow pistol powders for the Storm to maximize the benefit of the longer barrel.

I would not try to exceed recomended loadings for the 9MM cartridge just because you are using a Carbine. The gun is a blow back action and I would it and assume it and the barrel were designed around SAMMI specs for the 9MM cartridge.

My question is why?
By "why" I mean , why are you going to another caliber when you are already into a .40 cal.
Then again maybe your not shooting a Beretta 92F in 40 S&W where you would be good to go, two firearms and magazines that ate interchangeable.
But, then again that is my flawed logic.
I am shooting some cast 125grn cast bullets over a charge of 3.something Accurate#2 powder.
I bought 1000 rounds of this from an Estate sale for a friend and this stiff fires cleanly and perfectly every time I pull the trigger. Except of course if you reassemble the extractors incorrectly!!! Like some I know did last week.
I am plinking with this load in the gravel pit and can kill every rock I aim at within the 100yrd range.
I quickly took a look at the load info on the web and this was a low recoil/accurate load for shot pistols.
But as I mentioned it works in my CX Storm.
Just my .02 today.

I have no other good answer other than I want a 9mm to go along with the various other calibers I currently own. I would still like a 12 gauge shotgun some day for clay shooting, maybe a 308 for some long range shots. Hard to say what's next.
