I am wondering if it is worth it to reload 9mm. I usually pay $9.99 for 50 factory rounds from Wholesale Sports. What do people, on average, spend reloading 9mm with jacketed bullets? So, for example, what would be an average cost on 50 rounds?

I just ran the numbers through an excell program I have. On average it costs me about $7.00 to load 50 rounds of jacketed ammo and about $4.50 for cast rounds. That isn't taking into account your initial outlay for loader and dies etc. I have found that once I start loading it's addictive and I must load that complete box of bullets or until I am out of pimers.

That's not a bad price for factory feed. Lead reloads cost me between $4 - $5 per box of 50 and jackets are slightly more than that, in the $7 - $8 range I think. A buddy and I usually do a substantial bulk order every year or so and that keeps our jacket bullet cost down as well. It's even cheaper if one of us picks it up on a trip down south as shipping thousands of bullets through CP or privately can add up.

I've noticed the cost of factory ammo come down fairly significantly at wholesale sport (I used to pay $13.99 and not $9.99 for Winchester factory loads), but I am not sure the individual components are cheaper (i.e. the price of bullets seems fundamentally the same as it was several years back when the dollar was weak).

i think it really depends on how much you shoot.. you'd have to reload quite a bit to offset the cost of setting up a reloading setup.. i don't shoot pistol that much so for me $10/box of Federal AE is okay.. esp, you can find reloaded ammo like those from Cdn BDX at a pretty good price too

I buy all factory Winchester Winclean. If I buy over 5000 I can get it for $90$95 per 500.It gives me more time to shoot then sit there and reload.Dont get me wrong some people enjoy being able to make there own and feel its all part of the fun.

Buckshot has a good formula to load 100 for $10:

1000 124 Grain FMJ Bullets from Canadian BDX $ 67.00 (6.70 per 100)

1 Lb Hodgdon Titegroup Powder $19.99 (7000 grains, 4 grains per shell, enough for 1750 rounds) (1.15 cents per round for powder, so $1.15 per 100 rounds)

1000 Federal Small Pistol Primers $26.99 (2.69 per 100 rounds)

Total component cost per $100 rounds is 10.54.

Now, the cost of brass wasnt factored in, but I believe once fired can be had for as low as $15 per 1000.

Also, if you use lead instead of jacketed bullets your cost goes down to $46 per 1000 which will bring your overall cost for 100 rounds down to $8.44.

alot would depend on were you live , freight can be a killer .
on the other hand 9mm brass is nothing but time around here , if you want to pick it up .
The nice thing about reloading is you are never really out of ammo , just out of assembled ammo . Couldn't make it to the store day before the shoot ? no problem , squish a few together and your good to go .
Another nice thing is you can try different weight bullets , types of powders and power factors to find a load that pleases you more than the 9.95 special .
Just my 2 cents

Sounds good, but if you don't have a Wholesale Sports or other discount dealer around you, you pay over the odds for the shipping of lead and the haz-mat fee/Loomis for powder or primers. That really adds a lot to your overall cost. 9mm around here is $13 or so for 50, so reloading is still worth it for me - it's half-price. Also I feel I have learned a lot about shooting through the reloading hobby.
