i have copper plated 124 gr bullets not sure of make and winchester 231. someone reloaded for me long time ago...either way
want to get a good load for my glock. want to start with few loads and try get one i like.
i read i should treat copper plated bullets same as lead. so reloading data would be as for lead right?.
also in the reloading data it is C.O.L is this cartridge overall length?
why is this number 1.125" for plated and 1.090" for jacketed where factory spec for 9mm luger is 1.169?
can someone explain?

1.169" is the maximum length on a 9mm round but depending of the chamber of your gun it will surely cycle better with a shorter OAL. In my CZ I use 1.095" for Campro 147GR CMJ and 1.110" for Campro 124GR CMJ

My recipe for 9mm using W231 & 124GR CMJ bullet is 4.6GR @OAL 1.110"=> 1167FPS

thank you...i was waiting for it...off to do some loads next. i have glock 9mm. i tried these in my gun ...at max length and no problems at all.
cmj is that copper plated? someone said that you shouldn't put these plated bullets over 1000fps cause they loose accuracy and fall apart.
4.6 gr of 231@ 1.110 ?..this is more than max load 4.4 @1.125 according to manual. how hot is this load?

CMJ = Copper plated. Some brands are better than other IMO. I tried many and now use Campro (0,008" plating), even for 357Mag loads @ 1124FPS (158GR)

9mm 124GR @ 1167FPS is 144 power factor... not that hot !

Personally I use the jacket data for CMJ bullet even if some are saying that we should use lead data

Just to tell, I have a CZ Shadow, 4.7" barrel, all steel gun so maybe it will kick a little more in one with less weight/metal but anyways you should always start low and increase slowly when you reload & usually you'll find the mose precise load at +/- 75% of max

Curious how dirty the 231 is with 4.6 gr? I use 231 for many of my handgun loads and it can be dirty. I do have a stash of it that I can use. Titegroup seems to be the powder of choice.
 
at some loads it is surely not the cleanest one.. when I do 38 spl load with W231 it is worse than in 9mm.

I use TG for my 147GR loads and I don't find it that much cleaner than W231

The cleanest I tried is VV 3N37

I use 124gr Aim hard cast copper plated bullets over 6.4gr of HS6 for my 9mm loads. with a COL of 1.145 for my Glock and other 9mms. works great for me. I always pull my barrel from the Glock and use it as a go/no go test. The rounds should drop into the barrel and be fully seated without you having to apply any force to them. If they don't seat all the way in check your COL and your crimp.

I use a mild taper crimp when seating the bullets and may get one of two out of 100 rounds that need a touch more crimp after the seating test in the barrel.

I have run relaods from the same batch in all 3 of my 9s and have never (knocking on wood as I type) had a FT feed or extract/eject problem.

I have used 4.40 gr. of HP38 using the Frontier 124 gr. plated bullet. Average velocity of 1113 FPS giving a power factor of 138 in a Glock 17.

W231 is only clean burning when used at max pressure. But as a slower burning powder it is also "safer" if charges are off a bit etc....

Plated bullets should use lead data, not jacketed data. One thing when using any data is to compare the lengths of the BULLETS to see if they are the same (or close) not just OAL of the finished round.

If the BULLET you are using is significantly LONGER than the bullet in the published data, then you should either load longer OAL and/or reduce the powder charge.

i think i will go with standard OAL for plated bullets just to be safe and try different loads.
i have used 231 with fmj but it was a friend who reloaded. it is a bit dirty but i dont shoot that much and i dont mind cleaning
