i am starting reloading 9 mm, i am using winchester 231 powder, winchester 115gr fmj bullets and winchester primers.

is 4.7 gr of powder ok?, i looked in many books and cant find the bullets data!

thanks

that MAY not be enough to make it cycle- my speers lists 5.2 bottom and 5.7 top end

DIRECT FROM WINCHESTER- 115 grain fmc, 5.1 grains of 231- 1125 fps- 30,500 cup- that's out of the paper version of the WINCHESTER handloading brochure- i just checked the winchester site, and their factory ammo has warmed up to 1190- 231 is their standard powder, so they've added more powder- about another .3 grains

I am using this data from Sierra:
115 Grns FMJ bullet
OAL = 1.100"
WSP
WIN 231 Min Load = 3.8 grns
WIN 231 Max Load = 5.3 grns

Good luck and load safely. :)

"...dont list the Winchester fmj 115gr bullets..." Load for the bullet weight. Who made them or what kind of jacket doesn't matter. 4.7 grains of 231 is the starting load for a 115 grain jacketed bullet. The GDHP load. WSF powder is given for a 115 grain FMJ though. 4.9 to 5.7.
Then work up the load. Do this.
Beginning with the starting load given in your manual, load 5 rounds only. Go up by half a grain of powder, loading 5 of each keeping them separate until you get to the max load in your manual.
Then go shooting. Shoot at 7 to 20 yards(depending on what you're using the pistol for), for group only, slowly and deliberately, off a rest. Change targets between strings of 5 and allow time for the barrel to cool(not usually a big deal with a handgun). When you find the best group, sight in. Assuming adjustable sights.
"...Rule #1: Make sure the gun is loaded, and your finger is on the trigger..." Nope. Rule #1, pertaining to firearms in social situations is, "Have a gun." snicker.

I've been useing 4.3 grns win 231 with 115 cmj and I thought it was alittle much. My G17 cycled so fast it broke my front sight off today.
