Hi all,

I would like some advice/opinions on reloading 9mm.

I am shooting for a while now, and must say that I really enjoy the sport. But because of;
1. the shortage/availablitly - Toronto
2. the cost of 9mm ammo

I would like to start reloading.

I am thinking about going with a Dillon progressive loader XL650 - Capable of loading 500 to 800 rounds per hour Lifetime "No-B.S." Warranty

Here is why I am choosing the Dillon 650.

I would like to only spend about 6 hours (1 day of each month) reloading.
If I can carefully reload about 1500-2000 rounds for the 6 hours that would be enough supply to shoot for the entire month.

My budget for equipment is about $1000.00 - which I think I can recover in 1 year of reloading.

Current cost 35cent per round - NEW
1500 round per month $525.00 - $6300.00 per year
calculated cost 25cent per round - RELOAD
1500 round per month $375.00 - $4500.00 per year

Without saying, I would seek guidance from a reloader with years of SAFE reloading experience.

Any advice/opinions on equipment (additional that may also be required - scale,etc), cost, safety concerns, etc is welcomed.

"...recover in 1 year..." Less than that, usually.
Contact Epp's. They're a Dillon dealer. The press will eat most of your budget though.

Aside from the cost of your press, you may have over estimated the cost of reloads.

From the latest prices listed by smacdonald....

BDX 124gr fmj's $110
Fed 100 primers 36
Brand x powder 20 (cuz you'll use less than a pound)
subtotal $187 with tax

If you have your own brass, that's it. If you need to buy brass, figure an extra $25-30 dollars. If you shoot AIM or Frontier plated bullets, subtract $10-15
 
Good choice. Lots of advice from current owner/users on this site.

I use a 650XL for 9mm, .40S&W & 45acp. My advice:

1) Don't try to set speed records with 600-800 rds per hr. Been there...done than. I ended up not paying close attention and had some squibs (primer but no powder). Luckily I didn't fire the next rd.

Lessons: Take your time. Aim for quality vs quantity. When loading pistol, look into each case as it advances to ensure powder present.

After you complete a few thousand rounds, the speed will slowly come on its own.

2) Consider using a Lee Factory Crimp Die in the last position.

3) Quality control your finished product with a Chamber Gauge or the actual chamber of the pistol being loaded for.

I wash the range crud off my brass in warm soapy water and let it dry, then I tumble it. this also gives you a chance to inspect it.
 
Yes you will save $. Or you could spend the same amount and shoot more. Reloading can be very addictive and really quite enjoyable. If you have any questions, this is a great place to ask.
 
Plus it makes it easier to evade answering the GF/wife/significant others pointed questions regarding shooting costs.
 
If you cast, your cost will go down to 5 cents a round factoring free used wheel weights or even paid. That's neglectable.

$28 primers from Lebaron if you can get them and $20 in powder factoring free brass and liquid Alox (get off name by the gallon - it'll last forever).

One day with breaks you can cast about 5-7k bullets.

Only issue I have is need to chamber check each round with my P226 9mm barrel. I don't want to use the lee factory crimp die since it'll resize the bullet too. I use the lee micro groves 6 bullet mold. Drops fine. No need to resize.

BTW, I have the 650 too. Loaded 5k+ of 9mm already. No probs worth mentioning. Only got two misfires. Maybe bad CCI primer!?

I still don't understand how 1 primer can detonate causing the rest in the tube to dentonate too. I thought the wheel disc is isolated enough to contain the detonation!? At any rate, I don't wear muffs/plugs. I will next time. Just read someone said his ears were ringing for a month. I popped a brass with a new primer with my gun in the basement and boy was it loud. Didn't expect someting that little can make such a loud POP with some flames too!

The 650 is an excellent machine that will serve you well for many years. Dillon really stands behind his stuff, and the "no b-s" warranty is great. He just replaced some parts on my 30 year old square deal, no questions asked. I told him what was broken and he sent me new ones. First rate!

I run about $14 per hundred but that's not why I reload. For me it's always been about getting the load exactly the way I want it. That's why I reload.
