what kind of velositys do you get with 180 and 165 grn loads. with a 180 scirocco (very long bullet) i'm only showing 2950 average. if your getting better what powders are you using. my load is 66.5 grns of imr 4350 and a fed 215 primer.

what kind of speeds are you looking for?

2950 is what factory 180's are loaded at, and at the pressure they are loaded to, there isnt any room for improvement

i used to load for a 300 wm and 3100 was possible with a 180. i was hoping someone found a better suited powder. i'm not used to loading at or below factory numbers. most all rifles i load for exceed factory numbers safely.

300 win mag has a bit more powder capacity and thats why it can surpass the WSM when handloaded

you can push the limits with your WSM, but I wouldnt suggest it at all.

100 fps means #### squat downrange, in the real world

66.5 gr of H4350 pushing a 180 gr bullet is really pushing the envelope. I was loading 67 grs with a 168 gr TSX and some guys on another forum just about went berserk. They basically accused me of trying to kill myself.

that load gives me factory velocity from a 24 inch barrel. 2950 average. there is no pressure signs and i have had a minimum of 5 firings from win brass. i'm using x dies and have only had to trim once. these loads are quite safe. i have used the same load with 180 hornady and sieras too. what kind of speed are you getting with the 168 gn?

Trying to 'hot rod' cartridges is the number one cause of pressure-related failure I'd wager. Some cartridges (especially old ones designed for pre-WW2 era guns) have room for improvement when used in suitable strong rifles. Other cartridges, such as the 7 mag, are loaded light form the factory for some reason.

But with something like the WSM - a brand new, cutting edge, high performace round loaded with non-canister grade or blended powders - well, you probably should consider yourself lucky if you can duplicate factory ballistics.
