Looking for reloading data for

.450 Nitro Express No. 2

Have found a couple but would like some more choices in powder

Also, anybody know who sells the "Dacron Filler" material which is always mentioned to be used when reloading over capacity cases?

Dacron filler

Go to a fabric store. The filler is the same material used for filling quilts and comes in various thicknesses as well as in bulk.

Ross Seyfried wrote quite a bit about reloading the express cartridges. He had a formula using Re 15 that involved taking a percentage of the weight of the original cordite load IIRC. Then he did use dacron over the powder. Do some research through older Handloader magazines, or contact Wolff Publishing. The guys on Accurate Reloading forum probably have the info at hand.

I would also think XMP5744 could be used for somewhat reduced loads with no problems.

If your gun is a double rifle finding loads that match the sight regulation probably limits your powder choices quite a bit.

Thanks for the info on the Dacron

I subscribe to Handloader and will probably order the Wolfe Publishing book on Big Bore Cartridges

Will check On the Accurate Relading site as well

Rifle(s) will be doubles. A friend and I are building a couple of doubles and will regulate the guns to the load so to speak but have to come up with a reasonably accurate load as close as possible to the original factory loads as we can.

We could have chosen almost any calibre up to .500NE (my preference) but chose .450 because of barrel availibility, chambering reamers, dies and brass all being pretty much equal for those sorts of calibre's.

From what I've heard, 3031 comes closest to Cordite in terms of burn rate. It's not identical, so wou can't just substitute it in

Thanks Gibbs

gee only $87.50US for 5 rounds

what a bargain

I would order a case of 500 but you know, what with the problems of importing ammo from the states and all I guess I'll stick with reloading some

I noticed they are out of .505 Gibbs

Did you buy all their stock?

BTW Gibbs, what kind of brass do you use in your .505

I am ordering some Bertram in .450NE No.2, best price I can find so far is in the $100 CDN for 20 cases at a local store which means no added shipping but is still a little pricey.

Take those No 450 2's, grab them!! I see that Huntington is seeling them for $72.25US for 20!! I also have some HDS cases but I not impressed with them. I have some issues about fit!

No at those prices I did not enquire!!

BTW, what grove diameter did you go with for your rifle. I understand that there is quite a variation on these rifles!!

Since we are building the rifles with new barrels we are going to use .458 which as I understand it was the standard for .450NE and .450NE No.2 and the barrels are easy to get, relatively cheap and the slection of bullets is of course very wide and not too expensive either.

I noticed A Sqaure also sell ammo for most of the big bores a little cheaper than the Kynoch stuff

little over a $100US for 10 rounds depending on calibre

Yes we are going to go with the bertram cases, although i thought they were pricey I haven't found anything cheaper and I hear good things about the quality

We will probably buy 40 or 60 cases intially. We are hoping that will last us a very long time as these will not really be plinking guns

What!! Not taking the 450 to the range a blow up some water bottles!!

Also great for new shooters you know!!

:D:D:D:D

I am sure there will be a few non traditional targets shot Gibbs

Although not quite in the same league with your .505 the .450NE is an all time classic big bore and they should be wonderfull toys when finished

I have to admit that we went for the No.2 cartridge instead of the standard 3 1/4 .450NE just because its longer (one of the longest cartridges ever made along with the 475 No2)
We figured that if we were going to the trouble of building these we may as well use the most impressive looking cartridge we could as the price for reamers, guages, dies, brass, etc is the same anyway.
We are quite aware that the extra length does not give any more performance (I know some women that might disagree with that statement but thats another discussion) and NO we are not compensating for anything:)

No problem'sThough some of my friends asked the same, they backed away quickly when I offered to let them shoot the rifle!!

Yes the 450 is one of the classics and was a favorite of the Tiger hunters in India!! Along with the 400!
