First of all I know the dangers of mis-measuring, mis-judging or being a dumb ass when reloading for a rifle.

I'm going on a week long whitetail camp next week and I want to know if it's safe to take apart a few 12 gauge winchester ranger field load shotgun shells and reuse the components to make a half dozen grouse shells for my 1895.

I only have 4064 and IMR 4198 for powder.

I know it's dangerous to use powders that you do not know or understand when loading for a rifle, but if you took about 10gr of the powder and 1/2 ounce of the shot from the 12 gauge donor shells and put them into 45-70 casings with cardboard wads and sealed with wax, can anyone see any reason why I should not do this?

With all different powders, I see that 11-12 gr produces about 10,000 psi in a .410 casing. Between 15 and 20 gr do the same for a 12 gauge shell.

I do not wish to push the boundaries here, I would love a 900-1000 fps load max for noise and safety. I'm just looking for a 15-20 foot grouse shell as we run into them all over the place. A couple in the shell holder would be great. People are very divided on using 2 1/2" .410 shells in their rifles. I want to play nice.

Constructive criticism would be much apreciated, I'm several days away from doing it. I want to hear about you ideas and experiences.

Thank you for your time.

One more big question.. I have never hunted with my 45-70 yet... I have about 30 of each round.. 300 gr HP at ~1700fps, 350 gr Hard cast at ~1700fps and 325 gr. Leverevolution at 2000-2100. Which one do I shoot my whitetail with?

I have never shot a deer farther than 100 yards at buck camp and I usually use a .270 winchester with winchester powerpoint 150gr. I bet all three of these are the grim reaper on whitetail though. What do you suggest?

Thanks,

Ryan

Any of those bullets/loads will work good for broadside shots on Whitetails. Use .410 data and powders for your brass shotshells, if using felt and card wads.
