Hey there!
I was curious if anyone is aware of the legalities of purchasing RELOADING equipment (dies, presses, etc, not components like powder or primers) in the States and crossing the border with them.

Is there anything that prevents doing so?
I know I can ship them across.

Also, do you need a firearms licence in the states in order to purchase or possess reloading equipment? My father in law is coming up from the states, and I wouldn't mind saving on some shipping.

Thanks for any insight!

Primers and powder are the sticky wicket I am lead to believe. The Canadian government allows you to bring back fairly generous quantities, but I think the American side (State Department) has something else entirely to say on the subject of non-residents possessing said items. Check with their authorites - BATF - before proceeding. Or else find someone with dual citizenship or residency status.

With parts, I was told they are only concerned if you are in possession of a receiver (meaning bare frame in whatever state of assembly). I brought back a very pricey rear sight when I crossed the other day, and the customs guy never batted an eye.

But be sure, and check with Border Services here, and the BAT-men down there with what you are planning to buy.

in many cases the problem is not with Canadian customs - it is with American homeland security.. folks who come home with something with no problems didnt consider the problems they could have had if they had been stopped in the USA and found to be in possession of some item that only USA citizens and residents are able to obtain/purchase/posses.

I believe it also depends on the value of what your father in law is bringing in. If I remember correctly an American can bring an item valued up to $60 across the border and call it a "gift", after that they may be charged a fee.

Its been a while since I asked this question at the border, so double ckeck for yourself.

The BATF isn't on the same page as the ZEALOTS at HOMELAND SECURITY.BATF said I could and the other guys NO WAY NO HOW............................waste of a dime......Harold

No problem :), and no license required.

The border service on either side don't care about any of it! You do not get checked by the us border coming home anyways! It is the department of homeland security that will ruin your life. I have talked with the guys at the buffalo gun centre and the break down is this:
Ammo, guns, and gun parts as well as reloading supplies, and components are not allowed to be exported(taken across the border) and in most cases canadians aren't even allowed to posess them in th us.

Fortunately, presses and dies are A-OK ! Bring across all you want. You'll get hit for taxes though. You can buy ammo too. You just can't bring it across the boarder. If you're gonna have possession of ammo or guns in the states, its best to get a $20.00 hunting license from Alaska. You can get one on line instantly. Print it out and you're good to go. It'll cover your arse with BATF if you ever run across them.

Check out the CCW forum. Most Canadian CCW permit holders are fairly familiar with the process required for possessing guns and ammo legally in the States.

There are no taxes .Just stay within your allowable spending limit for the time you were there...........It's $750 Can per person for a 7 day stay..........Harold

You sir are incorrect. I don't know about the east coast but here out west, I have been thought one personally. They will set up a spot check on US soil just before the border.

BTW, presses are able to bring back to Canada.

And you, Sir, are definitely correct on all points, especially about spot checks by US authorities on the US side, and not just in the West! I was present when one was conducted at the departure gate for an Air Canada flight I was on, from St. Louis to Toronto.

How many times does this have to be pointed out on this forum?

They do sometimes set up spot checks! But this is not common practice and for the most part these only go up during high traffic times! I live 10 minutes from the border here in niagara falls and have been over and back hundreds of times never being stopped at a spot check! I also never go during tourist days like holidays! I didn't say anywhere in my post that presses were not allowed! I said reloading supplies and components, sorry if that was unclear. I just recently brought back a tumbler and bought my press there last year. Anyways go by your press but I'm not chancing buying much else. I'm lucky cuz buffalo gun centre here sells firearms to canadians for a small fee which still saves me money especially on harder to find stuff. Tauus judge with 6 inch barrel - 525!!!!! And the used prices are outta this world! Lol
