Reloading for .38-72 Winchester

Anybody have experience to reload .38-72 Winchester?

If I can find empty brass?

Check with mysticplayer - you might be able to get Bertram brass for this rare cartridge.

Shooter's Choice in Waterloo lists formed Bertram brass at $49.95 per 20.
There's cast gas checked bullet data here. Add the W's.

I bought my dies from Buffalo Arms, expensive but what are you going to do. As far as the cases go I used 405 Win as the parent case, trim the rim to .519" and used a 38/55 (.375-.380) bullet. Worked great but I sold the rifle and the dies/brass as a package deal about 5 years ago.

Buffalo Arms has cases at $23/20 or $109/100 and dies for the 38/72, cast bullets meant for the 38/55 should work although I would suggest you slug the bore for exact bullet requirements.

Yes, a very nice Win. 1895 all original with octoganal barrel.

Could you not use .30-40 krag brass instead of .405 ? It would be a little short but you could seat the bullet farther out to compensate. I haven't priced .30-40 brass but I expect its less than .405.
