HELLO--- I HAVE BEEN RELOADING OVER 20 YEARS,
now---

I AM STARTING TO reload ----specifically--- for 6.5x55 for use in a krag ? I own a m-1912 norwegian krag .

i know the krag is a weaker action than the 6.5 swedish mauser...........any start loading info / different for the krags ?

I have imr 3031 and varget and blc-2 on hand but seems only loads for the swedish mauser get mentioned.

Any info / advise welcomed.

The Norwegian Krag is not as weak as most assume. It's the US Krag that's most worthy of that reputation, as the Norwegian Krag has an additional bolt locking surface. All that said, even though Norwegian Krags have been rechambered to 308 Win, it's still wise to keep them to loaded to M96 Mauser levels.

I've been using the loads in the Lyman #46 manual in my Norwegian Krag since that manual first came out. I had several thousand rounds of Swede surplus, loaded with #44 Powder (a few grains slower than imr3031) under 160 grn, round nose cupronickle jacketed cup and core fmj bullets with exposed lead cores.

I shot all of that ammo through my Swedes and that old Norwegian Krag. I believe there isn't any distinction made between the two simply because the actions are close enough strength wise and that the pressures their respective militarys loaded their ammo to was well within their safety margin design.

I just looked at my old records and the old Swede ammo used an average of 33.8 grains of the #44 powder in their 160 grain loads. I didn't have a chrony back then so can't give you a velocity but I suspect it was close to 2200fps.

My Krag is OK with 160 grain bullets but shoots 140 grain spire point boat tail bullet better. I use H4831 now in my surplus rifles. I found BLC and BLC2 to be a bit fast for the bore diameter and bullet weight.

I suspect you're going to use 140 grain bullets?????

imr 3031 is still a good choice.

If the bore in your rifle is shiny, 34.0 grains would be a good point to work to but close to max. I found that the Krag liked the hottest loads of 3031.

If your bore is pitted, as most of the bores I've seen on the Norwegian Krags have been, I would cut that load back to 32.0 grains.
