Reloading For The Mighty M One Four!!!

You can use 4895, 4064 or Varget, among others. They are all very similar in burn rate. The Varget is a touch slower....
Varget is only slightly slower than IMR4064. If people were bending op rods they were probably loading very hot. Either IMR4064 or the 4895's better duplicate military loads, though.

Burn rates are subjective only.
Regardless, it is port pressure one should be concerned with - as indicted by those in the know - US shooters that have used M14s in NRA high power competition for decades and have millions of rounds through these things. If these guys say Varget is a poor choice for an M14, I'll keep mine for other guns thank-you very much for the insight. I'll take the word of guys who have burned out more barrels in M14s than guys on here have had guns....ymmv.

Just read the Zedicker download. IMR4895 is the benchmark and is the MILSPEC propellant for the 7.62 NATO rd. All of IMR4064, IMR3031, BLC2, H335, and W748 are compatible with the M14 and are worth a try. I always found IMR3031 to perform best in my HRA M14. Varget has been around for 20 yrs or so and does well in a .308 bolt gun. It is not a miracle powder though. Many of us were shooting nice little groups out of 7.62 and .308 rifles before it hit the streets. When Varget first came out I did a lot of comparative shooting with it in a heavy barrel .308 and found little to choose from among it and the old stand bys. The best propellant by a nose in several .308 bolt guns proved to be WC755, an Olin commercial grade propellant which is no longer available.
