I recently purchased my first handgun - a Webley 38 S&W. I intend to reload and would like to know if I need a die specific to 38 S&W or will any 38 die do? Have any handloaders on this forum developed pet loads that shoot well in Webleys? Is there a source of cast bullets and other reloading components on Vancouver Island? Thanks in advance.

gab,

You'll need to purchase 38 S&W dies, others will not do, check out this link for loadouts:

I ended up buying some ribbed dies from Custom Reloading out your way, buyer beware.

You'll find the webley to be lots of fun, and almost nessesary to reload. It goes 28/box
out here! Unfortunatly mine went to a new home, but i'll be getting another ;)

Actually, you can use .38 Super dies to load .38 S&W cartridges since they are both straight-walled .384" diameter cases. The only difference is that .38 Super dies usually come with a taper crimp die whereas the .38 S&W die sets usually provide a roll crimp die. You can also use a .38 Special shell holder with the .38 S&W case.

I use 158 grain .357 plated bullets in mine ahead of 2.5 grains of WW231 powder. If your bore is in good shape then there is minimal accuracy loss at 25 yards and under.

Yes PrairieMedic, yours did go to a new home ;). I've also put around 300 rounds through her already...200 reloaded. PM sent with the revolver, the RCBS die set, which is entirely different from the other .38s. The good news is, same shell holder as .38 special...saves you about 7$ ;)

Yeah, these are fun guns to shoot. Accurate?? well, if those can really be called sights, one might be able to get it figured to the point of putting 10 on paper at 25 yards...after 300 rounds, still consistently scoring mid forties to mid fifties with it, usually with 1 or 2 fliers.... Reasonable for an old war horse, and for me to boot.

Thanks for the great info. Next Thursday I am travelling to Seattle to visit the inlaws. I will stop at Kesselring's gun shop to see if they have any 38 S&W dies. If they don't have them I will make a trip to Custom Reloading. At the Nanaimo gun show last weekend I bought my second handgun - a 22 caliber No 2 MK 1. It is the basically the same as my Webley MK IV but someone stuck a sleeve in it to convert to 22. Should be both fun and cheap to shoot.
