Reloading new AA hulls

Hey guys,

I am new to reloading so help me out. The new AA hulls seem to have a separate plastic base wad. I am using claybuster clones (CB1118-12) for the WAA12. These don't seem to want to seat in the new AA's. Is there a different wad I should be using or are these new hulls not reloadable. Thanks

i just gave a bunch to a fellow shooter because i was having same problem i tried three different wads . he told me that there is a new wad out there for those new ww a hulls haven t been down to our local sport shop to see if they had any but my freinds has got some . and they worked hope this helps you out. jack the bear
 
The plastic base wad sticks out a bit so that when the wad is pushed into the hull it gets hung up on the base wads. Thus when it comes time to crimp the hull collapses at that point.
 
I just discovered the same thing.

I thought I'd scored a major coup when I was allowed to gather all the empty AA's I could pick up at a recent sporting clays shoot. I haven't gotten new hulls for about 15 years and I assumed these AA's were the same as my dwindling supply of 'old' AA's.

I got them home and loaded a few last night using my normal 1oz load using 700X and a Lage Uniwad and got the buckled hull. I'll have to try my 1 1/8 oz load and see if that changes anything. FWIW the Lage Uniwad will slide down into the plastic basewad to sit on top of the powder so even if it were up higher in the hull I think the diameter of this particular wad would be too small to support the sides of the hull and prevent buckling.

If there is a wad that prevents this I'm guessing it must seat on top of the basewad and support the sides of the hull to prevent the buckling. If so, a powder that isn't sensitive to wad pressure would be needed I guess.

What a bummer that they ditched the good old AA Compression Formed case. These cases I just got are grey and have AA and HS on the case head.

Anybody know a load that works with these? If they only last for a load or two as mentioned above they are likely not worth the bother.

I've reloaded the old AA,, the new AA and the Win. super target hulls. The nem AA and the Win. super target hulls both have seperate base wads. I use either Red Dot with Down range XL1 wads and 1oz #8 shot and have had no issues. I use 17.7gr red dot for myself it gives the same velocity as the Win super target shells the club brings in but with less recoil because only 1oz of lead. The DRXL1 wads are the same as the win WAA12SL only green not pink!! And lots cheaper!

I'm new to reloading myself but my son and I have reloaded well over 1000 new AA hulls in 12 and 20 ga without a single problem. I have heard of hulls crumpling/crushing but we have not experienced it at all. We've loaded 3/4 to 1 oz 20 ga with a variety of powders and wads and 7/8 to 1 1/8 12 ga also with a variety of powders and wads including the Claybuster WAA12 clones.

I took apart a factory round and found that the wad is right down on top of the powder and inside the basewad too.

I made a hardwood block that I place in my Lee Load-All press below the two crimp starter stations when I'm doing the final crimp. It prevents the final 1/16th" or so of press travel and results in a perfect crimp with my one ounce load. The shell OAL ends up about mm or so longer.

It adds a step to use the block but it's no big deal. It looks like I'll be able to use these shells after all.

I would suggest to the OP that an adjustment to the final crimp length might fix the problem.
 
I must be lucky because I've used the"new" 12 ga. AA hulls for quite awhile and have had no real problems with them. They reload well last just as long as the old ones and I've used WAA12 wads with no hiccups.
 
Howdy;
I use the cb 1118 wads in WAA . Load one once of lead and set the crimp less . I use a lee load all and have put two steel plates on the crimp station. Use feel to judge how hard to mash down on the shell.
