Hello, I am still new to the reloading scene, and didnt like how slow my lyman turrent press was for pistol rounds. So after researching it i grabbed a honrady lnl progressive press. Much faster, but today was my first try at reloading with it. So ive got a couple questions. I have loaded .40s&w on my turret press, but i recently aquired a 9mm, so i loaded for that. I am using brand new lee 9mm pistol dies, once fired range brass tumbled, and bullets i bought from al simmons gun shop. The bullets are 115gr with a copper jacket, i also picked up some in 124gr and 147gr(i think they are AIM projectiles, but they do not list the 115gr on their website).

So set up the press according to the included video and went to work on my first 100 rounds of 9mm. It was going smoothly but when i was measuring the OAL of the finished rounds i was getting fairly constistent results, but i would get some than didnt seat far enough down. When i had the turrent press no big deal run them back into the press and they would be ok, but doing this on the progressive is a pain.

I was seating them to an OAL length of 1.090"
My first question is my lyman manual says seat 115gr. jacketed HP 1.090 OAL, but the bullets im using arent HP, so do i still seat to the same length? There was no other load data for that bullet weight.

Second question is when i was running the prgressive i would measure the finished OAL, and most of the time i would get between 1.088"-1.092 which i am fine with. The problem was some random ones and even 2 or 3 consecutive rounds would come out around 1.100".

So how much can OAL deviate and still be safe?

The only thing i can think of that would cause the bullets not to seat consistently is my expanding die is not seated far enough down? and thus causing the mouth of the bullet to not be open enough? Im just guessing i really dont know.

Help is greatly appreciated, my hornady really puts a smile on my face:) and i wanna get her running to her full potential.

Also i bought an RCBS bullet puller from lebaron(i had a gift certificate) Anyways i follow the instructions and insert a pistol round in it screw on the cap and whack it against my bench, but the bullet does not come out of the case? I dont wanna hit it too hard, i have a tendency to break thing, im a big guy. So whats the deal with that? does it only work on rifle rounds. (i havent tried it on rifle rounds)

"""""So how much can OAL deviate and still be safe? """"""""

Your die's are not firmly in contact with the shell plateholder or you don't have consistant hands. Open up the firearm and take barrel out to check the OAL and you will get fairly a good idea that how you are not having good headspace and improper feeding. Just can't solve all the things at once ,trials and errors will teach a lot

Bullet pullers generally haven't worked as well for me as advertised. :)
I've found the only way that works is hammering repeatedly on a wooden block, at about 50% of the force you'd pound a nail in with a hammer. That's the best I can explain it. Usually takes 3-7 raps on the block.

Your Oal looks a little short, a HP bullet will have a shorter oal because its flat on the top, I would assume your bullets are not flat point, i load aim 124gr to 1.100 oal and they work in all 5 of my 9mm...

Your different lengths are probably due to different brass and I would not worry about it, you are not out by much....:)

I'm loading .40 S&W - Aim Projectiles - with a Hornady LNL AP (Which I love). I have had a similiar issue with OAL... very slight deviation. Look closely at the plated projectile... there is a molding ridge on the tip that isn't always the same. If you are careful to miss the ridge while using your calipers I think you'll find the OAL doesn't change as much as you may think. That is my experience anyway...

Ok so ive got 100 rounds of 9mm loaded with 115gr jacketed bullets with about 3.7gr of 231 powder, all seated within the range of 1.085" to 1.095".

Are these gonna be ok to shoot? i just got a brand new 9mm, and it would break my heart to mess it up with my crappy reloads.

Also on a different note, my lyman manual does not have loading info for the 124gr bullets i picked up. It offers info for a 125gr jacketed HP, so whats the deal with that? Im looking at the page for the 9mm luger (9mm parabellum)(9x19mm).

The page for the 9x21mm has load data for a 124gr. FMJ, but this is not the right one.

So do i need another manual? or is there an online source for this type of information?
