reloading recipe for a BLR 81 .308.

the short:
I know every rifle shoots differently, but I was hoping some one had a little experience reloading .308 for a Browning BLR 81. I would help give me a place to start.

The Long:

Father in law has all the equipment for reloading. Told me I could use his gear any time. "Buy your own dies, bullets, primers, and powder. Put your name on them and you can leave them here. Clean up when you are done." So I went to the local Gun Shop of my preference and asked for dies and a seat and then asked what I should get to reload. He then listed of a bunch of powder, bullets, primers etc. and I just had a deer caught in headlights look on my face. "Ummmm....I'l be back."

Going through my barnes reloading Manuel. I've looked at the bullets I would like to try, but I'm not sure what kind of powder would work best. I'd like to try reloading, barnes mrx BT 165, Hornady SST 165, Nosler solid base ballistic tip.165 and finally sierra game king SBT Game king. Obviously i'm not going to so this all at once and that's why I need help. I don't know what kind of powder to use. That's why I'd like a recipe that some one else has tested to save me a lot of time and money. If you can help me awesome. If not then could you point me in the direction to a sight or some one who can help me?

you need to Full length size for the BLR Not a lot of caming action to remove stuck brass

the BLR can be quite A good Shooter But if using it for hunting the first one has to count --> 2 and 3 have to be close (on paper at least)

I got the full size for exactly that reason. It was also suggested by the gun shop owner. I've had new federal power shok out of the box jam once. Took the right amount of profanity in the correct order to get it out. I could only image expanded reloaded brass would be a beast to cycle.

When I had a BLR in 308 I used 150 Hornady SP, fed 210 primers, Lapua casings and H4895. This load combination gave consistent MOA, gave very good performance on deer. As stated in previous post make sure that the sizing die is properly adjusted as mine wasn't quite turned in far enough for the first few and I had to really squeeze the lvr the last little bit to close the action. Once I properly adjusted the die there wasn't any problems. Hope that helps out

The Browning BLRs I have had all shot well with Winchester brass, Federal 210 primers, IMR 4064 and a 180 grain Nosler Partition. I usually ran them a grain or two below max, whatever the rifle liked for accuracy. The 165s you listed are all great bullets too, just dont marry yourself to a particular bullet/powder combo until you have tested in your rifle, then once a good load is found, go buy as many components as you can afford for that one load so you will have supplies for a loooooong time. Nothing worse than running out the week before a hunt.

My good friend uses nosler 180 vital shok and swears by em' in his older model BLR 81. I'm going to try 3 different bullets. One bullet at a time going through different powder weights shooting 3 sets of 3 shot groups and record everything just about down to what underwear I was wearing that day and then compare the data. I have high hopes for the mossy oak briefs. LOL

All joking aside So far i'm going to use once fired federal brass,cci 200 primers, h4895 powder, and nosler ballistic tip 165 grain bullets. I'm still waiting on my nosler manuel so i haven't loaded any rounds also waiting on my sierra 165 game king sbt's.
