I've yet to pirce out shot these days (10yrs since I've done much reloading).
I have a lot of lead reloading supplies and may consider using bismuth since I cant find any steel data online for the powder I have that is. IMR 4756 and Win 540. Since I have powder and 2000+ Win red and yellow wads it will probably make more sense to buy bismuth? Is there a good retailer in eastern Ontario or should I buy it through the gun club which I just joined? The last time I bought supplies it was at Mallorytown landing, are they still in bussiness? I can't remenber the name of the place any help?
Does the Lyman 4th edition have steel and bismuth to any extent, or is there a better source now? IMR seems to have lead only data on there website, and I don't thin Win makes 540 any more.

Thanks guys

Hi
do not mix lead reloading components and steel shot components.
go to your closest "gun shop" and ask for steel reloading components by "RELOADING SPECIALTIES", you may also find their web site on line.
they have a good manual, with loads they have worked up.It took a while for me to get used to reloading steel. another option is that factory loads are getting affordable for price and even CTC has them.

I was in the same position that you are now due to the lead ban. I have had to move up too BB, BBB, AND T in steel to get same hitting force as my lead shot. lead 2 is BB in steel.wads are totally different, and powders are newer and developed for steel, popular hulls are FEDERAL and to get max shot by volume 3" and3.5" are popular. I also load steel for 10 Gauge.
pm me if more info reqired

If you didn't find steel recipes for the powder you have, it is probably BECAUSE IT IS UNSUITABLE FOR STEEL.
You cannot just mix and hope it all works. The powders used for steel have a different burn rate.

Steel reloading

You can use IMR 4756 for steel.
I like to follow #4 receipe from Reloading Specialties booklet which comes with wads.
Hull:Federal Gold Medal 23/4"
Primer:Winchester 209
Powder:SR 4756 29.5grains
Wad:SAM 1
Shot: 1 oz.
Velocity:1470
I am using T for this load as they have more energy than smaller pellets and with steel I belive that speed kills and not the number of pellets.
There is 54 T pellets in 1 oz. plenty to kill a goose.
I never saw any advantage to shoot 2oz of shot at much slower velocity.
You can see that most steel factory loads were 1150-1200 f/s now they are discontinued and most loads are 1550 ft/s.
