Does anyone out there have any firsthand experience with this cartridge??. Information on the Load Data site is relatively skimpy, but their load does use a Hornady .358 250 grain bullet ( as opposed to a .356 ). The rifle I will be loading for is an older m98 sporter, and I am attempting to" regulate " the load to match the open sights. Barrel is stamped for the 18.2 gram load. Thanks...

You can safely substitute 358 Win loads in a M98 action.

A good rule of thumb when there is no or little published load data, is that loads for the same case, but with a smaller bore size are safe, even published max loads. In this case that applies to the 8X57.

Another rule of thumb is that loads for the same bore size, but in a larger case are not safe, at least the published max loads. In this case that applies to the 9.3x62, so if your loads got into even its min load range, you should know better.

The best bet (and splitting the difference), is if you find a cartridge a bit smaller with the same bore size. In this case, that's the 358 Win. If you are skittish about such logic, the 358 Win has an extra layer of safety in that published load data is on the low pressure side in deference to the many lever guns chambered in it.

With a 250gr bullet, do not exceed 2350 fps with the slowest usable powders (e.g. Varget). Go slower with faster powders like IMR3031.

CGN members "Noel" and "Baribal" are au fait with this cartridge, too. There is also the Swedish Civilian Arms forum of Gunboards which has a wealth of info.

Those guys are good sources of info.

With a 280gr jacketed bullet, I'd start with:

- 42.0 grs of IMR3031; or
- 44.0 grs of IMR4064, IMR4895, or H4895; or
- 47.0 grs of Varget (will be nearly full)

and stop at about 2100 fps if you want to keep the pressures in the 40K psi range. If you get an MV more than about 50 fps higher than what a published 358 Win load gives, you're running at higher pressure.

I seem to do trial and error, you only see the good results IF I get them.:p

Sorry, no experience with the 9x57 but what already has been said by my peers here is very sound. The Nitro Express forum and the AR forum has a huge amount of data to research for these less common chamberings if one is looking to read up on them more.
Should be a great chambering, it has often tempted me as does the 10,75x57 but there are two 9,3s in the safe that need some attention first.

Happy shooting!
