Reloading vintage S&W New Model #3 44 Russian

This is Great info it would be nice to Sticky this info somehow as theres lots of us 44 Russian shooters and theres gona be more real soon :D

This is Well done Win 38 55 :) im gona try your loads.

dingus, I worked on my load a bit more today and finally settled on a permanent load for my vintage .44 Russian. If you click on the same link above, you can see my next post where I try a few more loads with 5744 and then settle on my final load. It is good to have this out of the way ... now I can just enjoy shooting it. Loaded up 50 rounds this afternoon, once I'd settled on my long term load.

One thing I would be interested in is if somebody tries the identical load, but in a S&W with a longer barrel. Mine is 6". I'd like to know what the velocity is at 3 feet for a longer barrel.

I cant help ya there as my keeper is a 4 inch S&WDA44 russian i sold the 6.5 inch one but i wouldnt think that extra 1/2 inch would make a big diffrence.
Them first model DAs only came with there longest barrel at 6.5
Im gona go file that extra info tho.

Im finaly getting a load i like for my Rigby with modifyied 45 long colt cases but still playing with diffrent bullets.
Its an on going never ending Afair for me but! I like it :D

Now this AA 5744 im gona have to check this stuff out i have been loading Unique and am concerned about peak presures as 6 grs of unique is listed as max but safe.
Also this AA 5744 might be better in my 45 long colt. if its as acurate as pyrodex but nicer clean up no doubt!

How are your Groups as Acuracy is very important to me i have put 3 shots into less than 1 inch at 20 yds with pyrodex?

Dingus, accuracy is my next project. Up to now, I've been shooting one handed, off hand, which is not a good way to test for accuracy, at least not for me. My next visit to the range will focus on group size at 20 yards and I'll post my results here. The question is whether the gun can shoot better than I can shoot it?
