Relocating serial # on a Lee Enfield #1 MKIII* Is it kosher?

They sent us freaking stickers with serial numbers on them...so ya..it is probably illegal to move one stamped in the gun..

You can put the serial number anywhere on the receiver that you like, however, you cannot remove the original one! If you cover it in some way you must be able to remove the covering so that its visible (can be checked).

Under Section 108 of the Criminal Code.

Tampering with serial number

108. (1) Every person commits an offence who, without lawful excuse, the proof of which lies on the person,

(a) alters, defaces or removes a serial number on a firearm; or

(b) possesses a firearm knowing that the serial number on it has been altered, defaced or removed.

Punishment

(2) Every person who commits an offence under subsection (1)
(a) is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years; or

(b) is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.

Exception

(3) No person is guilty of an offence under paragraph (1)(b) by reason only of possessing a firearm the serial number on which has been altered, defaced or removed, where that serial number has been replaced and a registration certificate in respect of the firearm has been issued setting out a new serial number for the firearm.
Evidence

(4) In proceedings for an offence under subsection (1), evidence that a person possesses a firearm the serial number on which has been wholly or partially obliterated otherwise than through normal use over time is, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, proof that the person possesses the firearm knowing that the serial number on it has been altered, defaced or removed.

For your info, I was thinking of cobbling a way to put a good solid scope base on a #1 MK III* without using the charger bridge as something to drill holes in that the ass end of the rail would affix to, you may know how the Williams rear sight base goes on there it is attached to the right rear of the receiver, well I was thinking of putting an angle piece there. The front would (now that I have to leave the serial # alone on the receiver) - there is another one on the barrel, can I deface that one as the barrel is not by definition the firearm? So in this case, I was thinking of either turning a custom collar that would go on the knoxform with a slot milled for the picatinny rail, and drill holes for it and maybe drill 2 holes for it that would go into the custom bushing. Drawback: It would be completely dedicated as a scope only gun. this sucks. Option 2 is: get one of those scout bases that goes around the knoxform, cut it back so that it clears the rear sight, and have a quick detatchable cantilever base. What do you all think?

Sounds like a lot less work and scout rifles look sharp.
