Rem. 597 accuracy?

I had one of these rifles and the biggest problem i had was trigger pull. The one i had had about a 7 pound trigger good enough for rabbits at 20 yards but not very good for target shooting. There is a hammer available for around 50 bucks us and will improve pull to about 3 pounds much better but still abit strong for my taste. I sold mine after only a short period .....but that means nothing i sell everything after a short period.

I installed a $60 hammer which brought the trigger pull down to 2 lb. I consistently get 1.5-2" groups at 100 yards off the bench. Shooting prone off a sandbag, all my good groups are sub 2". I use PMC Zappers and I NEVER clean the barrel. The Zappers are very accurate because of the wax, but they feed like crap (because of the wax).

It is great for rapid-fire with Winchester Super-X (fairly accurate, feeds reliably). If you are offered a used one, by all means buy it, it's a great deal. Otherwise I would stay away from Remington because they don't give a crap about our rights.
 
I would say that the 597 is just as accurate as my 10/22.

To be honeset I prefer the 597 to the 10/22.

And yes the trigger pull is a little heavy.

One problem is that I cannot find any mags for the 597 that are greater than 10rounds. If anyone find any let me know!
 
I have a regular barrel 22 magnum, it will group about 1" at 100 yds. I installed a VQ hammer also, it feels much better now. Good gun with the metal mags.

I also have a regular barrel 22 Mag 597 and have gotten 1.25" groups at 100 yards with CCI ammo, it didn't feed too reliably with the original plastic mags but since I bought the metal ones it works great.

Lol, saved the $ and bought the 597T - laminate stock, bull barrel, the works. Was proud as hek when I took it out to the range. The the jamming problems started. Constant, out of every clip, 2 or 3 jams. Took it back to dealer, they played with it and said fixed. Back to the range, more jamming, back to dealer, back to range until the the receiver, firing pin and spring just fell apart inside the gun. Got my money back and purchased a Marlin 7000T (don't make anymore), however there is a Marlin 7000 for around $250 (S.I.R., etc). No more jams. Had for about 1 1/2 years, and I might sell off some of my other guns, but not the Marlin. 3 weeks ago at 30 meters, I put 58 out of 60 shots in the bulleyes.

Buy any gun you want, just not the Remington. Alot of other guys I know that have or had the 597's experienced the same jamming problems.

Same thing for me with the 597 that i had couple years ago...first one and last one for me!!!.....average of 2 inch grooping @ 50yrd benched.....feeding problems...always jamed...and i've try all the ammo available here! My friend have the same but in 22 mag. and never jamed and 1/2 to 3/4 @ 50 yrd with the Winchester supreme 34gr so if you absolutely want a 597, with my personnal experience, buy one in 22 mag. For 22lr, the 7000 seem to be the best out of the box from what i've red on many forums.

Thanks for the feedback folks. It's the same thing I have heard around here, you love 'em or hate 'em. It sems to run about 3 great rifles to 1 bad one, and when they are bad, they are very bad. It seem to be a hit or miss proposition. I've also been looking at an H&R 45-70. Perhaps I should shift my attention to that. I already have a few tack driver .22's anyhow, Zastava & Anschutz.
 
I have fired one. Very accurate. The trigger is a little heavy. I like the mag release and drop free mag over my 10/22. Would I trade no..... but the Remy is actually a decent, accurate .22

There not too bad if you to have a semi, I think the previous jamming problems were due to the magazine and that should be fixed by now. I had it beside my Savage MkII BV at the range and it (597) could not come close in the groups department. (both stock rifles)
