Rem 597 or Marlin 795?

Marlin. Micro-grooved barrel cannot be beat for accuracy in a rifle that price. More reliable than the Remington.

They aren't as customizable as other out there, but then again they don't NEED to be modified to be exceptional shooters.

I've had a few 597-s so far but I never had an issue with any of the magazines. However, I agree that Marlin magazines are built better. I think the 597-s are great guns. Easy to update with Volquartsen parts and you have an excellent/cheap shooter.
I never tried a 795 but having read so many good reviews, would buy one in a heart beat.
I think choosing is just a personal preference. You can't go wrong either way.

597 owner here, and mine is silky since day one. Factory 10 round mag was stiff for the first 10-20 loads. It's since softened up nicely. I'm somewhere in the 2500 rounds range, with 5 misfires (4 out of 1 box). Used a box of 50 remington firebolt to break it in, then switched to Federal 525 bulk boxes.

The 30rd banana mags do not hold the bolt open on the last shot like the factory ones do, and some of those mags need a bit of sanding to make them fit & release properly.

i have both, if hi cap mags are a deal breaker go 597, if not both are about the same accuracy wise, standard mags are good in both, trigger on 795 is heavy but there is a spring upgrade around now. both mine are at 5000+ rnd count will minimal cleaning and minimal issues, personally i prefer the 597.

I only own a 795, and have never owned a 597. Based on my experience with the 795, I think most people are very happy with them and I can't see ever selling mine.

597 vs 795

Just had the quandry myself. I had both in my hands Saturday, One was the Marlin 795SS and 597 AAC-SD. I was intent on buying the Marlin as I have a 22WMR marlin and really like it. But I walked out with the Remington, I liked the stock better. It just fit that much better. The Marlin`s stock is just too small and I found it uncomfortable to hold.

I had it out to the range yesterday and put 500 rounds through it with less then a handfull of problems. Of course thats after a good cleaning and backing the screws the hold the guide rods off.

Another Ford vs. Chevy question.

Never had a Remington, but have had several Marlins and still have a Marlin 981T. Obviously I am a Marlin guy but will not fault the Remington fans.

The same company owns both brands now......

lol

I'm not a "team Remington" guy...I was sworn off of them. About 2 years ago, acquired the 597 as part of a "I want some guns younger than me" kick... After I got that 597, it was soon after had a Nylon66, and a 12C pump.

I do have a weakness for rimfires...

As suggested, now Remington owns Marlin, the line in the sand isn't as defined. I do love every Marlin .22 I've handled (old and new). They make a fine .22.

Not suggesting this as an alternative...I was a 64(Cooey/Lakefield/Savage) fan for decades. I'm a touch saddened by the fact a 64 is more expensive than the 795, or 597. The later 2 being (hate to type it) better/more refined .22s.

Went with a 795

Took her to the range put a couple hundred rounds through her
a couple ftf and the last shot hold open seemed a bit hit and miss
but realized some of the screws were loose imagine that brand new ,tightened her all up and then no issues for a few more hundred rounds
good accuracy and ate everything cant complain .
a bit light on the stock but ill get used to it.

You shouldn't have any complaints. I've yet to find anyone who hated their Marlin .22.

Found it a bit light but she shoots great and maybe once i scope it she will feel more substantial.
and i absolutely love my Marlin XT tack driver at 50 yards cant wait to take her outdoors
