I hit the range today for only the second time with my 5R. I had already zero'd at 100 yards using 150gr UMC ammo.

So first thing I got all setup at the 200 yd section, as my goal for the day was to re-zero at 200 yards. Instead of using budget ammo, I decided to give 168gr Federal Gold Medal a try. Check the second photo below for the results. I shot a total of 11 rounds today - the first 5 to get dialed in at 200yds, followed by two 3-round groups to verify.

That grouping is just a little more than 0.5" center to center at 200 yards, making is just a little more than 1/4-MOA by my calculation. Not too shabby given the 5R is unmodified "out of the box" shooting off-the-shelf ammo. I haven't even bothered adjusting the trigger pull as I like the factory setting.

Very very nice, If you get the chance pick up some Hornady 168 BTHP 'match' or the Hornady 'tap' my 700P loves em and they are quite a bit cheaper than the gold medal, also If you ever get a chance find some portugese fmj ( surp ) great stuff :)

thanks guys ;) I'll definitely give the Hornady's a try. The gold medals are really nice, but almost $48 a box at my local shop. I'll stock up next time I find them at a better price. As for the 5 shot groups...we'll see. I am planning on getting into reloading next year, so who knows? Until then, I might follow jennis and start working on two-shot groups.

Have you ever tried five shot groups.

LOL, I was out yesterday experimenting with seating depths and shot six 5 shot groups. 3 of them had the first 3 shots touching and the stress ruined shots 4 & 5.

The very last group I got the first 4 holes all touching under 0.35" then under stress I blew the last shot opening the group out to .435". I was still pretty happy but I know I can do better.

That being said, your 3 shot groups are still very impressive for an out of the box rifle.

What optics do you have on it??

I'm not ashamed to admit that I blew my budget by moving "up to" the 5R, so I had to scale back on the optics. It's a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-10x40 SA. It's a fatastic $250 scope that works, but it does have it's limitations. I'm going to work on improving my skills, and in a year or so I'll likely sell the 3200 and buy a 4200 6-24x50 Tactical.

Those two shot group are the best aren't they such a confidence builder :D
That is some excelent three shot groups especially with a out of the box gun. surfclod said it the five shot groups will tell you so much more especially the forth and fifth shots;)

i wish i could shoot that well!
I'm such an awefull shooter, I'm sure all my load developpment and bedding job doesn't mean jack since I'm such a poor shot.

Nice Shooting Subneural! Very impressive...

I hope my 5R (in the mail to me now) shoots half as good as yours.

I hope to compare notes with you on what works and doesn't with the 5R. I have some 15 year old 168BTHP (not sure if Win or Fed) that I will try then I think I will get reloading. I am really excited about reloading.

Thanks countyboy. I really can't take all the credit for the shooting - I used the same heavy front and rear sandbags for all these shots. As long as I put my crosshairs in the same place and don't pull, the shots tend to go in the same place :) We'll see how I do once I get a bipod and stop using the rear bag.

Please let me know how you make out reloading. I'm really interested into getting into reloading myself. I've been poking around youtube and found some good tutorials using single-stage presses (check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UPXqDrqjE4). I might look into either the Lee anniversary kit or the RCBS "rock chucker".

Until then, I'm going to see if I can find some of the Hornady 168 BRHP that jennis recommended. My next goal is to start throwing rounds downrange to the 300m reactive targets. I'll post pics and maybe a video next time i get out, which will probably be a week or two.

I'm pretty sure he said BTHP, or HPBT, hollow point boat tail.
Reloading is easier than you might think, people keep recommending the ABC's of reloading. All info is there to get started.
Personally, by the time I received the book I had read pretty much all I needed to know on the inter-lulz. Problem with gathering info from internet is filtering the BS.

You can get the book from Amazon.ca or maybe you want mine, I opened it maybe 2 times

Just a heads up. I had some of the old Federal 168 as well, in the white box. My 5R didn't shoot it well. The stuff in the new box shoots fantastically. I don't know if they changed the powder or the load during that time. There could be a few reasons I guess. Either way it didn't shoot well.

For sighting in Fusion 165 grain ammo worked well. It'll shoot about 3/4" at 100 yards and is cheaper than the target ammo. Plus if you wanted you could use it for hunting (It's hunting ammo). As a bonus the adjustment from this ammo to the Federal Gold was only one click up.

Well thanks for that! I've had a 5R, NIB and as yet unfired, hanging around for a year or so. I was wondering if I should sell it and build something else. You've renewed my interest.
